No, I do agree. But what should happen and what does happen are two completely different things Shouldn’t be a problem for new users now that they will never have had these features anyway. I do think a lot of people were lured for various reasons into getting a ‘beta’ monzo card and then forgetting that they were actively taking part in testing it.
Hey all,
Thanks for the feedback, we’re going to make it clearer to people that topping up current accounts with a debit card isn’t current possible before people upgrade.
We’re working on bringing debit card top ups to current accounts, but in the meantime you can use bank transfers to get money into your Monzo account.
For those that don’t want to move their salary to Monzo yet, setting up a standing order for the amount you top up each week/month/etc could help you keep using Monzo similar to how you used the prepaid card, without having to keep jumping back to your other bank’s app/website.
I hope this helps, we’ll be positing updates on debit card top ups as we make progress.
Sounds good. Looking forward to have it back
Is there a time frame on this? We were talking about this a month ago (e.g. Please keep the prepaid cards - #92 by ralf) and there still seems to be no progress on this front. Given that it’s now mid-January and we’d told we’d be automatically migrated in December, it’d be nice to know when this feature is going to be available for the CA.
And even worse, the official invitation emails still keep saying “it’s exactly the same” even though it clearly isn’t. At least this time in the email, you do at least tell us that - the preview invitation email didn’t.
It doesn’t even seem to be a technically hard thing for you to implement. You already have the hard part of taking the direct debit payment in place, you just need to change a number in a different database instead.
So, again, what’s the time frame on this? This week? Next week? Next month? After the forced migration?
More than likely it will be after the forced migration from what i’ve seen
It’d nice to be told officially rather than speculating though.
This is a big deal - currently topping up via direct debit means that you can do it safely and securely when out and about. There’s no chance that I’ll ever do internet banking from a public place.
The issue is, when an approximate timescale has been given before for certain things, people have held them religiously to it. So I think they are more reticent now…
Just to point out, that actually the whole process is now more secure than it was under the prepaid account. If you pay your wages in, and Monzo fails you’re protected under the FSCS guarantee for up to £85,000.
Could you elaborate on how you think topping up by card in public is more secure? Surely opening your mobile banking app, and then selecting bank transfer to an existing payee is easier than whipping out your card & entering the details + your 3 digit code?
Unless I’m missing something.
It’ll be available, when it’s available - and not before. Unhelpful, I know. But you don’t have to switch to the Current Account yet, and can be one of the very last holdouts if you want. You’re testing out the current accounts for Monzo currently, and so have to accept that it might not be fully feature rich. If there’s things missing in it that you need, you shouldn’t migrate.
Simple really?
Topping up via direct debit is clicking on card, clicking on top-up, selecting the amount and confirming. Very simple and safe, and at no time do I have to log in to my main bank account where my salary is paid into. So, it’s very easy to keep the pre-paid card at a small buffer amount of about £50, but top it up if I need to.
Simple but perhaps petulant solution, pay your salary into Monzo!
That negates the entire reason for why I want a Monzo card - to act as a card with a decent amount if I need to buy anything, but that will limit my loss if it’s stolen. This was after all, one of the ways Monzo was intended to be used.
Maybe that’s not your case, but surely it’s not too hard for you to understand why some people might want to do this?
Hey,
We’re aiming for a first version to be rolled out during November, before all users are invited to upgrade, and definitely before anyone is forced to upgrade. Whilst the jist of the work is routing the money to a current account instead of a prepaid card, there are complexities that mean it isn’t just a quick couple of lines of code to change.
Sorry the messaging around the upgrade process has been confusing, we’re making changes to it based on feedback - so it’s really appreciated.
Hope this helps!
Of course, as I said it was a petulant idea and designed as a joke
Thanks for the info Jami, great news that it’ll be available before we have to upgrade.
Definitely understand your point of view - but check out info about the Pots feature that have been posted. You should be able to manage both your committed money, and spending money, easily within Monzo a bit further down the line
As per topic. How do I continue to top up by debit card? Now the top up screen takes me only to screen giving me details of how to bank transfer in. Can’t find anywhere the debit card topup option.
When the current account started rolling out, it was specifically stated by Monzo that debit card topup would still be possible, so I really hope this has not been reneged on. The card is useless to me without this ability, at least for the next few months. I asked this question personally on that community thread and was reassured the debit topup was not going away.
I only have £20 balance remaining and am now very worried I am very soon going to be unable to use Monzo!
Please could someone help me out with this. Thanks.
No.
Topping up your account by debit card …will not be available.

You can clearly continue to use Monzo. Log into your other bank account and transfer £x into your Monzo current account using your new sort code and account number. It was widely announced that the topping up of the current account isn’t available right now. It should be in the future.
This is terrible. I asked one month ago and was told yes, it would be possible, and was directed to this statement by Monzo saying it would be:
I see now the statement I was directed to was from February, but it is what I was shown when I asked only one month ago.
I will need someone from Monzo to revert me to the prepaid card so at least I can continue to use it while that service exists, which I gather will be a little longer at least. I guess it will be better to contact them via help or similar rather than forum.
Unfortunately it isn’t possible to revert to the prepaid card. You can however top up by sending money from the bank account of the debit card, to your Monzo account using Faster Payments with your Monzo account number and sort code.
