Unable to create a joint account?

Anybody know why this is? Are they limiting applications of joint accounts? Do we know when they will be opening them up again? We’re about to move in together and wanted an account to setup all joint bills from

Monzo are stricter than other banks for joint account it seems, if they’ve said no then that’s the end of it. You can wait and re-apply or try another bank.

Joint accounts are still available and being opened, you just have something on one/both of your profiles that mean they don’t want to give you the joint account.

FWIW it’s 60 days since this was last asked and the answer then was as now

It’s not that I’m not eligible - I never even got to the position to try and apply with anybody. When I go to the app and try to tap on “Open joint account”, I get this:

I would hazard a guess it’s nothing to do with my credit score, which is great - there’s nothing here about eligibility

That would lead me to believe you aren’t eligible, it says right there they can’t offer you a joint account right now.

Eligibility is exactly what it is.

Wow, mad considering all the numbers… fair enough, will go somewhere else

Thanks btw - this thread is the answer!! I did do a search before opening this so thanks for bringing this thread to my attention!

It was actually @JIMMWX who found that one

Starling is a good place to go for an alternative.

Oh yeah! Thanks @JIMMWX - can see you’d gotten the same enjoyment out of that thread as I have! (Not eligible for Joint account - Monzo investor, premium payer and early adopter - #93 by JIMMWX)

Reading through the thread is a bit of a hellscape :joy: People arguing with each other over their credit scores and risk assessment. It’s a shame they can’t provide a less ambiguous message to the end user (are JAs just not being offered at all now but the options are still in the help docs? is it my risk? does my credit score not matter? etc) - I’m in no rush to open one just yet so might try again next month, but my partner’s got a Starling as well as Monzo account, I don’t have a personal Starling acc yet!

Many here use Starling for joint accounts including myself, it’s highly recommended considering you can have it opened and card ordered within in a few minutes.

To be fair to Monzo they can’t really. If for example they said “you can’t due to financial eligibility” then people would just start again and lie to get an account

True but also does it really matter. They don’t want you as their joint account customer and as far as I know they never change their mind. The effect is, you need to look for a bank that will accept you.

It’s an industry thing. Monzo will say the same thing as Barclays as Amex – we can’t give you one right now, you may wish to check credit files. It could have nothing to do with your credit file but it’s the easiest cop out as they can’t reveal exact criteria.

They definitely are, I have a big juicy button on my home screen, to everyone’s envy.

Let’s not have this argument again, but they absolutely can. They just choose not to.

I suspect this has little to do with the customer and more about Monzo’s internal failings. But that can never be proven.

If I was in the market for a joint account I’d probably just sever all relationship with Monzo because of this. Fortunately I’m not.

Surely that’s obvious? They aren’t under different regulations to other banks. Whether it’s a failing or a deliberate risk strategy, or some product problem or something else is unknown. But the fact that if Starling can offer someone a joint account would mean Monzo could and it’s internal somehow.

Monzo clearly don’t want it offer joint accounts to most UK people at the moment. Nobody knows why, though some people are convinced they do. It’s really unfortunate and their messaging in this is terrible. So I guess the only option is to choose some other bank.

I have to say I’m not a fan of this your not eligible type thing for the monzo joint accounts. I have one but if I was met by this I would go elsewhere. No other bank to my knowledge does this and simply lets you apply. I have seen enough complaints that it cant all be down to score. I would put good money that if @Abcmsaj applied for any other legacy joint account there would be two differences.

  1. they would let him apply no matter his circumstances
  2. he would get accepted especially if he already holds a personal account with good standing with the bank.

it boggles my mind how poor monzo is in regard to this.

Yeah I don’t get it either - they must just seen JAs as a non-starter or too much risk generally? Has to be a reason they’ve never really taken off with Monzo? Anyway, I’ll wait it out still coz I’m not desperate… maybe they’ll open them up next month!

And I’m secretly hoping that maybe they have a feature in the works that allows you to make a pot that you can pay out of (on your personal account) and other Monzo contacts can pay into, rather than a whole account!
