T shirt time! 👀 🕑 Send us your designs!

From stickers to badges to cardholders, we’ve heard and seen some super cool ideas for new merch here in the forum and via Twitter. Some of our customers have gone one step further to turn these ideas to reality!!

To celebrate of the abundance of talent and imagination across the Monzo community, we’re launching a competition to find a brand new t shirt design created by one of our customers :sunglasses:

We’re looking for originality, creative flair, an eye for detail and a sense of humour! If you think you’ve got this combination covered, you could be onto a winner👌 You needn’t be an expert in catwalk trends to create something awesome - even if you’ve no experience in drawing or graphic design, we’d love to see what you come up with!

To get involved simply download the templates here and add your design. Once complete upload them to this thread with a short bit of blurb to introduce your design to the wider community. The templates contain all the details and guidelines you need.

Entries close on Friday 15th September at which point we’ll launch a poll of our favourite 3 designs. You’ll have a week to vote for your favourite design, and we’ll announce the final winner on the community forum on Friday the 22nd of September (they will also be notified via email!).

We’ll turn the one winning entry into a screen printed Monzo tee (the first ever community designed item of swag!) which we’ll give away free at meetups and events :tada:

To get those creative juices flowing check out @sam’s mock ups below. For more inspiration head to our Teemill store to see some of our previous tee designs. Please only submit one design during the entry period.

I’m so psyched to see my idea of a t-shirt design competition come to life! Can’t wait to see the designs!! :tada::smile:

I’m intrigued as to the Monzo team’s thoughts on spec work.

I don’t think this is spec work -

Spec work is any kind of creative work, either partial or completed, submitted by designers to prospective clients before designers secure both their work and equitable fees.

Monzo aren’t selling these designs, this is simply a voluntary competition which users can enter for fun, it isn’t a competition for designers to win ‘work’. Am I missing anything there?

I think this is the key line - no ownership is given up.

This is also just a bit of fun. I’m not a designer, nor do I have any skills in that area - but I’m gonna give this a good shot!

There is no prize or anything for getting your design selected other than the joy of getting your design selected? Monzo isn’t selling the t-shirts, okay, but they do get a fun bit of free advertising which is usually worth more.

I don’t think it’s spec work per se because it doesn’t promise or imply anything, but it’s definitely poor form to ask for designs without giving anything in return. #lowbudget

Also on maintaining ownership - that feels like a legal thing thrown in to make designers feel less bad about themselves for shelling out free work :sob: What else can you really do with such a branded piece of artwork besides throw it on your dribbble page, but I digress

Fair point.
I still feel somewhat dubious about this. Presumably money will be spent on printing the t-shirts and they’ll have commercial/marketting value to Monzo, so Monzo gets something of value that they’re investing money in.
The designer, in contrast, will have their own design and some credit. To my mind, this is not of fair value and undertaking it this way capitalises on the same cynical incentives as normal spec work, albeit with a lesser, but still unfair, inequality.
To my mind, paying a designer for a design that has a definite value to the company, a profit-making enterprise, just seems fair. Saying that they’re free to use their own design elsewhere and not paying the winning design doesn’t. Opinion, of course, but I can’t say I’m not disappointed by this.

crikey that went down hill quickly from a bit of fun IF you want to try and design a Tee - to whats in it for me - don’t put a design in if you feel so strongly that you should be paid for your efforts  - its a bit of fun nobody is required to do it

I’m gonna be the first, not sure about the slogan but I think the hot coral goes well 00

Also toying with the phrase “because banks don’t have to be dull”, I’m enjoying hot coral references this afternoon

I’m not a designer. I’m doing this for fun. I would like a Blue Peter badge though if at all possible.

Pretty simple concept in terms of linking in the app with the actual t-shirt you’re wearing  . Colours seem to changed due to image compression on upload but you get the idea. :sunny:

Here’s my hand drawn graphic, as you can see I’m no graphic designer :joy: my inspiration comes from the designer Palace t-shirts you may have seen around but with a Monzo twist. I also wanted to focus on the Z just incase anyone is still saying Mondo.

Am I correct in saying all profits from the shop go to charity anyway?

Anyway could someone mock up:

‘‘040004’ - Legacy bank not found with hot chip smiling above?
