Starling Feedback

Starling spendings are expressed in percentage :+1:t2:

I too have the Login button hidden but you can still click on it.

I don’t like the fact that you need to use Google or Facebook to log in :sob:

Yes and a bar representing the % too…two for one :tada:

The community over there is very, very, very similar to this one. And I’m not just talking about the layout. Monzo you should be flattered.

The Tide community is also Discourse but monochrome in nature with tumbleweed blowing thru as very little interaction

To be fair, that’s partly because the site’s built on Discourse.

Not much in there now but I’m assuming it will increase. Kind of ironic that I only found out about it on here.

Some of the topics look like they’ve been copy and pasted from here but all mentions of Monzo have been replaced by Starling.

One thing that I feel particularly jarring with Starling is the top-up limit of £250 per day via debit card and Apple Pay.

I know you can top up larger amounts via bank transfer, but when your legacy bank requires a desktop web browser and secure key, it’s not always the easiest thing to manage.

Do we know if Monzo will keep the current top-up infrastructure and limits following the roll out of the current accounts?

We don’t know what the new limits will be yet but we do know that they will be less limiting :tada:

I’m quite disappointed they’re not allowing top-ups from credit cards. Since I want to improve my score the idea was that every month I would take half the balance on my credit card and put it into Starling to enjoy the convenience and avoid foreign payment fees but nope. Had to hack around it using TransferWise which converts your card payment into a wire transfer.

Their excuse was that they forbid credit card top-ups as they want people to not add money they don’t actually own and have a healthy financial life. While the goal is honorable I don’t think it should be up to them to control where the money is coming from. As long as the top-up isn’t fraudulent I expect them to take it no matter where it came from.

Ha, all is left to do now, is top up Monzo with Starling card and all good! I didn’t know you can do such trick with transferwise, so thanks for the tip!

You could actually send money from Transferwise to Monzo directly, but given that Monzo’s wire transfer top-ups seem to be manually confirmed by their team I chose to top-up the Starling instead as they’ve already got that part automated.

I wonder if Monzo would have to present it as a cash advance, which be far from ideal. I think this is done at say foreign exchange places

I don’t have a source for this (it was mentioned a while ago in the developer’s Slack channel) but my understanding is that they do & that’s why you can’t top up via credit card. Also -

Made 4 purchases now. Only 1 has a map and that’s wrong anyway.

Now I’ve found out where their well-hidden pdf statements are I’ll probably start using it to pay my wages in etc. 99% certain I’ll jump ship to Monzo when they finally get current accounts though as Monzo just seems, generally, better.

Also, I have a fully working overdraft, albeit only a few hundred quid, even though my credit rating couldn’t be any worse. Perhaps they know they’ll make money out of me.

Only accepting debit cards top-ups makes sense if you think of the higher credit card fees… Both Monzo and Starling only accept debit and Revolut accepts both but charges a fee for credit card top-ups.

However with Starling you can get a funds transfer from credit cards to acurrent account. Or atleast you can with Barclaycard. When Monzo has the current accounts the same rules will apply.

Obviously there will be a fee from the credit card provider and interest due should you not pay the balance in full.

Like you I have a foot in both camps. Truth is, Monzo will need to be something very special to bring me over from Starling. So far everything is looking and feeling good and this will certainly be bolstered with the arrival of their own community forum (which looks very much like this).

The developer team is responding well - listening and implementing development ideas and engaging well with its growing community.

A lot of Monzo users (me included) were sceptical largely I reckon because there was effectively, radio silence. I’m very impressed.
