Shared tabs can now support people outside Monzo

Hi everyone
I’m Vani, a Product Manager in the growth team at Monzo and I’ve got some exciting news to share: you can now add and track expenses with people outside Monzo in Shared Tabs :tada:

How it works:

On the Monzo side-

In your app, open up either an existing or a new shared tab and you’ll see a QR code as well as a link. Share this link with anyone you want to add via whatsapp, messenger etc.

On the non-Monzo side:-

Your friend who doesn’t have Monzo can open the link and enter their email address. They’ll receive a magic link, and once they click on that, they’ll be able to follow the instructions on the web app to continue. (Note: they need to open the invite link and the magic link in the same browser)

What can a non-Monzo user do in shared tabs?

A non-Monzo user can:

  • view the tab, activity and balances
  • add expenses

For now you can’t make payments between Monzo and non-Monzo users. But friends without Monzo can manually record that they’ve paid an amount.

We’ll keep making more (much needed!) improvements to shared tabs so you’ll hear more from us soon.

Let me know if you’ve got any questions and I’ll try my best to answer them !

Thank you for all the support!

This is an amazing feature that I’ve longed for a while, any chance monzo.me could be integrated?

As each time I use this I’ll only end up sending the other friends my monzo.me link for the amount

Very cool Monzo.

I’m not a shared tabber myself (and the lack of this experience was partly why), so this is a very awesome and much needed quality of life upgrade.

This is going to be great - now build functionality where my friend who has disabled notifications can be bugged to pay the money he owes me :sob:

This is AMAZING for using Shared Tabs with my non-Monzo family members!

And just as I decided to ditch NatWest Housemate because it’s been abandoned.

Great feature, can’t wait to use it.

I don’t understand this line though…

Anyone who doesn’t have Monzo isn’t a friend of mine

This is awesome, can finally ditch Splitwise

This is a great improvement to see, I’m a big fan of the Shared Tabs and have used the feature as a reason to push friends to sign up to Monzo because they make expenses on a trip so much easier to manage.

I did notice that the recent UI changes appear to have removed the ability to see the total spent within a tab, is there any plan to bring that feature back? Or perhaps expand on it so you view stats on how much each person spent?

This is a fantastic update to the shared tab :ok_hand:

Amazing, great feature add

Yay

Just did a test, after the invite link and entering the name it said whoops there was an error … ask for a new link, I copied the link again but still got that error. In chrome android, with accepting or denying cookies.

It looks like a non Monzo person can be part of multiple tabs under one magic link login, they sign in at tabs.monzo.me and all their tabs should be there.

Also the get support section it says use this form to contact us, the get help button goes to Monzo | Shared Tabs which doesn’t have any form.

This seemingly addresses one of the things that was keeping me using Splitwise.

I have a question about adding expenses as a Monzo user. Can I add non-Monzo transactions (e.g. a transaction I made in cash or using a non-Monzo payment card)? If not, that would be another factor that would keep me on Splitwise.

Yea, you always have been able to … just go to the tab → Add Expense → Add custom expense → Enter Details → :white_check_mark:

Thanks. Can you attach stuff to custom expenses (e.g. photos of receipts)?

Feedback for Monzo: It would help if you made video demos for features. Particularly for shared tabs as it’s not possible to explore much of this feature before adding others to the shared tab, but people may not want to invite others until they understand the feature.
