Public asked (invited) to swear allegiance to King Charles

I went and saw Guardians of the Galaxy 3 instead. Quite a few others in the cinema too.

Interesting perspective from a local shop owner this morning… he’s losing money from the drop in business due to the coronation, and is forced to close on Monday because the extra bank holiday, losing more money. So he’s kinda pissed off at the whole thing.

I’m not sure I understand why the extra bank holiday anyway… we had one last week!

Yes, because instead of giving people an extra holiday, we should have swapped an existing one, because people need to WORK. I’ve heard everything now.

Why is he forced to close?

Usually these things are pretty good for business no? Chance to flog some overpriced bunting and coronation chicken or something.

I’ll take any holiday I can get. We already get far less than most of Europe.

We don’t have enough bank holidays as it is. I’ll take any extra ones the government want to give us

It’s not an extra holiday. For most people it comes out of their annual allowance.

3 bank holidays in a month, then nothing for another 3 months… there’s absolutely no need for one tomorrow. If they insist, put it in July or something.

His shop was mostly empty, and pet shops don’t normally sell bunting.

Surprisingly the shops largely haven’t bothered, except Asda who had their seasonal isle with some tat with flags on it. The local butchers had a flag out…

Still not sure why he…

Partly true. A mitigating factor is that unlike most countries our public holidays always fall on a weekday (Monday or Friday) whereas in other countries they tend to fall on a specific day, which is sometimes a weekend day in which case there’s no additional day off for most people.

Roughly speaking 8 public holidays always on a weekday will work out the same as 11 public days of holiday on set days for people on a Monday-Friday week.

A lot of countries have more public holidays than this though.

I’ve never seen a shop open on a bank holiday, except supermarkets who do sunday opening.

I always assumed that was the law… otherwise what’s the point in it? Everyone would just work normally & take their days off when they liked.

Most shops are open wherever I have lived in my life on bank holidays. There are only rules on (in England) for Sundays if you are over a certain size you can only open for so long - which is why most supermarkets are only open for six hours (plus growing time).

There should be a protest about the protesters being arrested before they protested.

Only needs those protesters protesting about the protesters being arrested to turn it meta.

Never? Tonnes of shops are open on bank holidays. Bank holiday sales are a thing - ever heard of Boxing Day sales?

Almost 100% of shops open around here - most just have reduced hours but even things like our post office remain open.

Can you add polls within existing threads? Curious to see how republican Monzo audience is

Small shops can open at will, but easier for sole traders than those with employees that might be upset at losing a day off.

Corner shops with non-Christian owners/employees are the most likely to be found open in my experience.

Many shops probably figure that while they could legally open, footfall and sales would be too low to be worth it.

Boxing day sales? Not small shops… Pubs are open Boxing day lunchtime…

For example the town was completely shuttered on May 1st, just like it always is on bank holidays (which I remember well as the butchers has Tuesday as their closing day so they didn’t open until Wednesday, which caused some minor annoyance). The supermarket did their normal 10-4 thing, as supermarkets do.
