New plus card came! But already opened 😫

You didn’t answer my first question though
As the replacement will likely be in the same packaging, how many times will you replace that card, when it is obvious no one has removed the card.

There are far more effective and efficient ways to hack your account than opening mail on the off chance its a card.
Are the envelopes rfid protected? No.
Does anyone use rfid scanners, no, because it just isn’t efficient enough to get the hackers enough card details when they can download hundreds of thousands in one go, off the Internet.

Mine turned up like this and the Royal Mail seal stopped me from determining how much the seal was broken. I had no choice other than to ask for a new card

That’s up to Monzo to sort out rather than the customer. It’s Monzo’s responsibility to get the card to the customer securely and as I customer I’d keep requesting a new card until I was happy.

If this is a big issue then Monzo should pause new cards being sent out until the packaging issue is resolved then everybody is happy.

Whilst that is all true, I’m not looking at my phone 24/7

I’ll get the money back I’m sure, but if it were to happen just after payday and they buy a new iPhone, that is a lot of hassle I don’t need to sort it out.

And your other question, I’ll keep ordering cards until Monzo get one to me in a secure way.

(I haven’t joined Plus yet, so purely hypothetical, but I really wouldn’t advise people to use cards that could be compromised)

Me, none as my envelope wasn’t open enough to get the card out. If I had an open one I’d order as many times as it took for the card to have not been able to be viewed in transit. It’s not on me to make sure the replacement comes in suitable packaging.

I would hope that Monzo put a delay on their supplier sending new cards or ask them to use different envelopes in light of the requests that they’ve had today.

I don’t think that it’s likely but if someone saw that the envelope was already open (due to the fragile seal) , had a look what was inside and then took the opportunity to record the details that seems like a pretty effective and efficient way to get all the information required to make a fraudulent purchase or sell the details to a third party.

Not really relevant to seeing all of the card details required to make a purchase.

French is the official language of the Universal Postal Union, so Royal Mail include this on some labels that may be used on international mail. Another common place this is done is on airmail labels which also have ā€œpar avionā€.

This has definitely got to be a packaging error that Monzo need to fix rather than a issue with transit, I wouldn’t activate a card from a open envelope, hope Monzo fix it soon.

I’d be surprised if they weren’t already aware and dealing with it. Seems to have been enough of us contacting support about it

Absolutely!! My choice of words prob made it sound like I was saying Monzo need to fix this problem in a negative way which wasn’t my intention, I was trying to say I don’t think the issue is the postal service but the envelope itself is at fault rather than a third party spying on card details.

I am sure it is being resolved as we speak.

Either way, I wouldn’t be activating a card from an open envelope.

On the contrary, I think this problem will get sorted pretty swiftly.

Not really, the only transactions you can use the card numbers on are over the phone or online. In app verification kicks in on anything major online, so that just leaves over the phone.
Who buys, or sells individual card details? Totally inefficient when I already said you can buy hundreds of thousands of card details online in a single transaction.
Only really relevant to an opportunist 12 year old. And I don’t think they have many of them at Royal Mail

RFID Cloning would be far more efficient for all those 45 quid purchases with no pin. Easy to do too. Don’t even need to open an envelope. Just scan every envelope as it passes you.

Someone already said you can tell if the card has been removed from the envelope, so just trying to provide some perspective as to how much of a non issue this is.

I bet all the people panicking about the envelope are the very people who will never use the ā€œphantom card detailsā€ feature online though!

Same here

Nobody is ā€œpanickingā€, or not in this thread anyway, so let’s cool off on the finger pointing and second guessing the opinions of others and stick to the issue at hand please.

Monzo staff have always been clear that the customer is free to request a replacement card if they think the circumstances make that necessary. This is no different.

Slight subject change to lighten the topic a bit…

What are some creative uses for old cards? Hopefully this will help everyone regardless of whether they think its a waste or not as they’ll be getting put to good use

Monzo phone stand?

Mine came exactly like yours, ordered another

my card came sealed

You can’t ā€˜clone’ a contactless bank card with an RFID reader. Each transaction is cryptographically signed and encrypted using the chip on the card. This happens live, with the card signing the specific transaction as it is happening. Beside this, most cards won’t enable contactless unless the card has been used with a PIN at least once, and some online banks decline offline transactions unless specific circumstances are met.

At most you may be able to skim some details such as the card number, cardholder name, and expiry date. But this would be mostly useless without the CVV, which you can only get by looking at the card.

When I contacted the COPS they said better safe than sorry, apologised for what had happened and said they’d order a new card for me immediately. Great service (and within 10mins of first contact)!
