This for me is why I’m super wary of any Facebook Marketplace style transaction - just makes it so much harder to get recourse if things go wrong.
Even eBay to a degree suffers the same challenges - every now and then I keep meaning to sell medium-value items (some decent books, speakers, etc) - but knowing how eBay tend to side with the buyer on any claim - just fear getting scammed and having zero recourse put me off.
Things like vouchers would raise my suspicions anyway - I tried selling one on CardYard a year ago - the whole “You send us your voucher and we’ll verify it” honest we won’t steal it promise…
I can see why people prefer to go down this route of selling CEX vouchers, because when you trade-in with CEX you get around 25% more for your items if you accept a voucher, compared to accepting the cash.
That said, I’m still convinced this is a huge vector for stolen goods to be heavily profited from. Nick an [electronic gadget that isn’t a phone and can be remotely blocked], flog it to CEX, accept a voucher, sell the voucher. Who’s going to link you to the original theft, as the person using the voucher isn’t the person who traded in the item.

CEX do perform an ID check (at least they did a few years ago). It wasn’t exactly state of the art, but an attempt was made, at least.
Exchange Membership
You do not need to bring ID to sign up for Exchange Membership.
We just need your name and postcode.
Note: Exchange Memberships allow you to trade-in all items except mobile phones and devices having IMEI numbers. If you want to trade-in or sell mobile phones or any IMEI’d device, you will need Full Membership. Exchange memberships can only be used to sell for a CeX voucher. To sell for cash you will need a full membership.
Please also note that in the Greater Manchester area customers must be a minimum of 16 years old to set up an Exchange Membership and/or a Full Membership.
Just reporting that with persistence money was repaid in full.
Thanks to all who provided constructive responses to this thread.
At the end of the day, if you are scammed with a product thats paid via BankTransfer, its not the end with Monzo - persistence is key, and timings.
ill admit, their support (speed) could have been better, they could have frozen the money to make it so it could be recovered in full, as opposed to partial (instead of the long winded route through courts etc). but… got there in the end.
Person is still banned off Monzo afaik. also has a court case against him - so hopefully gets a marker on his account.
I have used CEX a lot over the years. But seeing someone bring in an Xbox 360 hard drive and not know what it was then the CEX guy go we have to check it works by formatting it… then offer him a tenner really took the biscuit for me in relation to enabling theft!
Are you saying CEX took the voucher off you because the guy reported issue then when you reported issue they took it off them? Does that mean they have no one the benefit of whatever they gave the voucher for in the first place? Seems like a win-win for CEX!
