Monzo doesnt work at Asda petrol pump

And this is exactly why Monzo should have put a more public message out about this.

I paid on the 2/3/19 on card £60 in store and

4/3/19
£10 Apple pay in petrol kiosk
and £26.50 apple pay in the store

no problems with card or Apple pay at ASDA for me

The issue doesn’t effect in store purchases. Just petrol stations.

It also doesn’t effect Google/Apple Pay - it’s only if you use your physical card.

Nice try, but sadly you’re not one in a million (or 1.5m to be more precise) :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’m thinking out loud here but I wonder what would happen if Monzo put out a message and said they don’t have any more information currently whether they would still get loads of support chats

Disclaimer: We have not confirmed this yet

It’s possible that Monzo cards will be working again now.

Now that the issue appears to be resolved - would be great if Monzo could provide a bit of a debrief (for those of us who are interested.)

Did Asda ever explain their acronym? Did they give a reason for blocking certain bank cards? Or was it genuinely a technical issue - as they seem to be saying on Twitter?

Got this reply from ASDA customer services earlier:

We were having some issues with our systems and the Monzo cards and due to that reason we have to temporarily block the cards.
These have now been unblocked so you should be able to use your Monzo card no problems.

No way was this a technical issue. I suspect we won’t be told what it was.

How so sure?

Just to update:

Based on ASDA’s confirmation, our graphs, and reports through in-app support chat, we believe that Monzo cards are now fully working at ASDA fuel stations again.

We still do not know exactly why this happened (and sadly, may never do) but after a lot of investigation and discussion, we do not believe it was intentional against Monzo.

More generally, it does look like pay at pump systems will be changing a lot over the next year with UK supermarket fuel stations finally being moved to the new rules for pay at pump charges. You can read a little more about what this means in this blog post by Daniel Chatfield.

I’ve shared the feedback here in the community with a couple of people involved in this situation. While there are certainly a few things we could have done a little better but I hope that you’ll appreciate the transparency from our side, even if we had very little to report over the weekend.

Hey @Rika, I just really want to know what that unknown acronym was! :joy:

Total Inability To Supply Usual Petrol (shamelessly stolen from the register)

It was a bad typo of UPT (Unattended Payment Terminal). A term used to generally describe a pay at pump system’s payment terminal. :slightly_smiling_face:

Somewhat anticlimactic.

Just my gut feeling based on the various posts on here. Asda staff bring told by Head Office not to accept Monzo cards is the biggest clue! Plus the vague “it’ll be fixed in one or two days” comment.

The long timescale is largely because some kinds of updates can take a long time to roll out to large fleets of terminals. Depending on the change, you may need to schedule a full system software download and a reboot to every single terminal in every store over extremely slow connections to stores that may be open 24/7.

And yet they were prepared to do this to ‘accidentally’ block Monzo in the first place

You’re assuming the technical issue wasn’t part of a wider update? Big update happened, unexpectedly broke something, needed to push an update to fix it

The way I read the thread, I came to the opposite view.

For it to be non-accidental, there’d need to be a reason sufficient to justify the effort. And then, customers would complain to Monzo, who would investigate, and if Asda refused to reverse the decision, then MasterCard would force them. So they’d find themselves back in the same position they were before.

In short, there would be no gain for Asda.
