Based on the timeline of events and no tangible reasoning from both parties as of yet, I am:
Guessing ASDA have identified that the percentage of not-authorised transactions are higher with Monzo cards so have decided to exclude Monzo.
Guessing the “technical issue” talk from ASDA is their window to come to an agreement with Monzo re guaranteeing transactions.
Guessing Monzo will decide not to guarantee, and will announce they’ve tried everything to resolve, but don’t worry as this is short term as in the mid/long term, the pre-auth amount will be £99 instead of £1.
I could be wrong on all three counts of course, but that’s how I’m reading the situation, particularly that it’s now clear it wasn’t a technical hiccup. Even if that’s correct, I don’t use ASDA p&p so meh, it is what it is.
Oh, I thought it was the misunderstood acronym? Or are Asda not being particularly forthcoming with the details (which it sounds like they aren’t)?
I never mentioned fraud personally - Although it’s fair that people will speculate about various things when it’s such a big business (not your local corner shop who don’t like the colour of the card).
I’m sure everyone here will be fascinated to know exactly what happened (if we are ever able to know the details).
Just got update through on help chat and they said WorldPay (who handle these payments) confirmed to Monzo today that this block has now been lifted. So, sounds like its back up and running.
I asked Asda if Monzo was back to normal for use for fuel and I was told they couldn’t give an exact time frame, the issue is being looked into and they are hoping for a resolution soon.
No it’s not accepted at kiosk, explain to the person at the kiosk you have a Monzo card, they should be able to help you out, it might be a case you have to get cash to pay for it or use another card if you have 1 at home.
Just joined the forum for this very reason. I went to pay for fuel the other day at an ASDA cash only petrol station and found myself unable to get fuel. Luckily my friend who doesn’t have a Monzo card was able to pay for me but a tad embarrassing when I’ve been raving about Monzo!
Hopefully this will be fixed soon as I was very close to going full Monzo but this has made me a bit worried. Would have been stuck if I had been driving on my own with no other payment method and an empty tank of fuel!
Unfortunately it wasn’t just Monzo that was effected by this issue although due to it’s popularity it got the most attention, hopefully ASDA resolve in the next day or two as Rika said above.
It’s always handy to a backup account should your main one have issues, no bank is able to avoid all issues. I suppose it comes down to which ones have the least!
