Ah thank! Yes it’s the default wallet. The phone is a pixel 3
I have got so used to not unlocking my phone that last week I had two Google Pay transactions over £30 rejected and I used my card to pay instead. Only realised afterwards that I just needed to unlock it! Would help if some relevant message had appeared…
Pretty sure when I tried it in Asda for under £30, it wouldn’t work until I unlocked my phone
Works for me when locked , Google pixel 3 and also my old OnePlus 3T .
On my OnePlus (can’t recall about my pixel) if it was over 30 the pin pad to unlock the phone would pop up .
Anyone know a shop it works reliably in and I’ll try there next?
List isn’t very updated , but those definitely accept.
But this is just a list of retailers that don’t have a £30 limit. Not a list that will allow contactless payments under £30 with the phone unlocked.
Google makes it sound like it should be everyone but I am yet to make it work
Oops sorry,
As you said above it does nothing when the phone is locked (no vibration at all,) then likely the manufacturer set it to be off when the phone is locked, so it won’t work in any shop.
When your phone is unlocked move contactless card around it untill you hear a beep, then try in that part of the phone when it’s locked , if there is no beep then most likely NFC is off when locked.
A quick search says fears of tapping a malicious NFC tag(opens a malware site maybe) when they phone it locked is why some manufacturers turn it off.
That doesn’t work either though as pixel phones is being reported as both working and not working.
Someone with a ‘working’ pixel phone needs to try it in Asda. If it works then there’s a setting somewhere that’s not well documented.
My Moto G6 Plus definitely does Google Pay without unlocking and pretty sure not needing to wake it as NFC is always ready. The software is 99.9% stock android. Running Pie now but it worked the same on Oreo.
This is a pixel phone though and the Google site claims it should work
Agreed! Need another Asda test subject with a pixel
This is a fairly interesting claim. I’m fairly sure we don’t have the option to disable it and it doesn’t sound like something we would have disabled.
Not sure if this is the case with other phones but mine needs to be awake before you can make any Google Pay transactions i.e. you need to press the power button to turn on screen. Additionally needs to be unlocked for payments over £30. In Asda I have only made payments <£30 so can’t comment on that, especially as I don’t have a Pixel!
From Google (after asking to speak with a supervisor) who seems equally unhelpful!
Monzo haven’t disabled the option as it works for some customers, so that shouldn’t be the issue with his phone.
In general could you see from your end if a Google pay transaction was done locked or unlocked ?
My phone definitely works when screen is on but locked,
When the phone is unlocked and I put it against a contactless card it makes a beep, but if I lock the phone and wake the phone and then press a contactless card against it, there is no beep.
Which makes me think that when locked it will only respond to certain NFC ‘waves’ from payment terminals and if yours isn’t recognising them then it may be something wrong with the NFC chip either software or hardware especially as other pixels work so it’s not the manufacturer policy to have NFC off when ‘sleeping’
A factory reset may sort out a software bug, on Android 9 (maybe just pixel phones) a reset is so much easier , if you do a full backup in settings then when you restore everything is exactly how you left it, home screen app order, widgets and all, an insane improvement over previous androids ( but WhatsApps and Pics you’ll have to do manually) you’ll lose music download caches from Spotify etc and certificates and hardware tokens though.
Works fine for me locked with an active screen.
Huawei mate 20 pro here.
Sometimes it makes me unlock it for under £30 - but it prompts me on the handset after tapping to do so
Was this in ASDA?
I used my phone in ASDA yesterday. Phone awake but locked. No issues. ASDA in Leeds. I just wish they’d let you go over £30 when unlocked, like Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons do
