Flex being charged when using debit on Apple Pay (TfL)

Issue:
I have three cards linked to my apple pay account, with my debit card as the primary card.
When I tap TfL touch pads, my debit card it showing on the apple pay screen, then I get a £0.10 charge from TfL to my Flex card. Later in the day, I receive a charge of £10. I have checked this many times now, I have been charged to my flex card several times but this has never been the card displayed on screen. I am charged properly (usually £15+) to the card I did use.

I believe there is a matching issue in your system, where you are charging the flex card incorrectly in addition to the debit card. My joint account card is also on apple pay and is never charged.

I have had to remove flex from apple pay.

Are you making sure that you touch in and out with the same device? You might have the same card on your watch vs phone vs physical card, but TfL see these as individual cards and would charge you 2x maximum fare.

Have you also made sure that you have the correct card set up for express travel mode on each device?

Unlikely you’ll get any money back from TfL for a long time until they sort out the fallout from the cyber attack they had.

Yes 100% sure. Only my debit card is set up for express payments and since the first time I always look at which card is showing on the screen when I tap, it’s always my debit card, just somehow it’s being replicated across flex.

Very aware of their security incident as I’ve been trying to get these payments back for a couple of months now.

The maximum fare is ‘up to £9.40’ (unless you’re touching in somewhere far-flung), so that wouldn’t explain a round £10 charge.

Touching in at zone 6, the normal charge for the day is about £15

Yes it would. If you touched in and out with different cards/devices that would be 2x maximum fares.
If you made a return journey that would be 4x maximum fares so you could see a round £10 charge for a 2x £5 maximum fares.

I hardly use contactless in London, but I thought TfL usually bill at the end of the week so that they can take into account weekly contactless caps.

If you’re being charged on the same day, that seems more like a maximum fare issue somewhere along the line. Could be all sorts causing it though!

They charge daily, usually overnight as the day ends at 4am for their charges.

Once you hit a weekly cap you just stop getting charged.

I’ve never had another card charged though, ever. The only conceivable thing is the Express Travel card is set to Flex and this is triggering automatically, but the poster is saying this isn’t the case.

There is no issue on the front end, I am looking at the Monzo debit card on the screen as I tap everytime now. There is some sort of issue happening behind the scenes.

What are your Apple Pay/Express Transit options like now?

It’s impossible to flex unless you’ve told it to.

Apple wallet app has this, have you checked it’s not set to flex?

I have had to delete the flex card from my Apple Pay but it was always set to my debit card.

It’ll be something you’d set up.

Has it since charged flex on removing the card?

It’s not something I set up and it happened maybe one in every 5 times or so that I used TfL. If it was something I’d set up surely it would be more consistent.

?

No, but I have only used TfL once since removing it.

It’ll be something you did, inadvertently.

Loading Apple Pay and then tapping - will use the Apple Pay card on screen.

Just tapping your phone - it’ll use the express travel card - which sounds like you may have set flex to.

…except there are no £5 maximum fares either.
(£6.70 off-peak for most z1-9 stations; there are a handful that are lower but they’re more than a fiver.)

I always do Apple Pay, I tried setting up the auto tap years ago, long before I had a flex card and it never worked. If the flex has some how been granted access for the auto tap it certainly wasn’t by me.

I think you’re right that it’s something to do with the express travel option but I don’t use this and if I did, I would never select flex as I have this for a particular purpose which is not travel. Do you think this is a bug or a fraud issue? Could it be related to the TfL security incident? I don’t log in to TfL option but I have been unable to access it the whole time this has been happening.

Neither. Human error.

You shouldn’t see any more if you’ve no express setup or flex in your wallet.
