So thought I’d give this a whirl - Tried to make a cash withdrawal from the post office. My understanding is they just charge your card at the counter via the chip and pin machine then hand over the moola (note this works fine with my HSBC Visa debit) - but my masterful plan was thwarted! No money was to be issued this day sadly. The cashier explained it was because it was a MasterCard, which confused me even more - would love some feedback… or an explanation…?
found by searching post office top right hand corner for subject
whoops sorry - Mods can you remove this thread from a housekeeping perspective please I was being a donut!
“we” don’t really have “Moderators” except for Monzo Staff for when posts get a bit out of hand and get flagged by the great Monzo Community users - which happens once in a blue moon - thankfully - no problems though repeat posts happen a lot always good to do a search for what you are asking first
it was not due to it being a MasterCard but down to Monzo not paying money to Post Office for this service
I tried to get some travel cash from the post office last week. I was told Monzo (and other similar bank cards like Revult) were only accepted with photo ID. No ID needed for the main high street banks like Virgin, Lloyds etc.
I thought the issues with using Monzo at tge post office had been sorted a long time ago?
This sounds like a different issue, being something of a KYC check rather than a technical limitation.
I don’t think Monzo supports withdrawals at the post office still. I’m unsure if this has been updated but the last time I did this the card reader bugged out and the guy at the counter told me that Monzo cards weren’t supported.
This was in June 2022 though.
It’s not supported.
This is the only time I use Starling if I ever want to add cash to my bank. Then just transfer it to Monzo.
Is the glory details. Lots of banks signed up with Postoffice to offer some banking functionality. Some banks allow some features like card withdrawal, balance enquiry, cash deposit, cheque deposit. Not all banks are supported. Not all functions are supported with a given bank. There are per-bank partner and per post-office branch limits. And I think post office are paid by the bank when people are using this service.
And sometimes the staff overuse the functionality.
I have had in the past postage being paid for not as a debit card purchase, but as a debit card cash withdrawal… Which imho is missleading. Hopefully given enough Monzo they stopped doing that.
If the PO process the transaction as a purchase, they pay a fee. If they process the transaction as a withdrawal, they get paid a fee…
Still the case in September 23. Annoying.
I get wanting to be able to pay in cash/cheques, but why are you annoyed that you can’t take cash out? Just use an ATM?
Valid point, although some ATMs do charge you a fee on top of your withdrawal.
If I do need to put money in myself I go to Nationwide bank as I have a backup current account and it’s just easier to go to a branch if near by.
My nearest ATM is 35 miles away. My nearest post office is 2 miles away.
In November 2024 this is still an issue.
The lady at the counter said there was a message in their system after I authenticated with my PIN saying ‘this card is not supported for this service’
Well that certainly answers the question ‘is this a suitable card for me’ then
Yeah right. Where might one of those (that does not charge you money to get your own money) be then. No banks within three miles of this house any more
Hi, and welcome to the community
It’s not an “issue”. Monzo never allowed you to do this from the start, and continues to do this. Write a complaint if you really care about this so much. Cash deposits are the only thing they offer (and for a fee).
You could literally just open a new bank account on your phone with most other banks and they would allow you to take out cash over the counter.
Starling Bank and first direct are two digital banks that offer this service.
Other than that, almost any high-street bank you use will allow you to withdraw cash at post office. Most can be opened on your phone / on the computer to finish on the phone.
edit:
Here are some banks that allow you to withdraw cash at a Post Office. There’s more, but these are the first five I found, including two all-digital banks.
Starling Bank - £300 a day
first direct - £500 a day
Lloyds Banking Group - £300 a day
Nationwide - £500 a day
NatWest - £300 a day
So there’s lots of options for banks that offer this service, including some banks that don’t do a hard check.
Ok perhaps a bit of background
I opened a Monzo account a while ago on an invitation from a friend.
I wasn’t aware of these limitations. Maybe I should have checked. Maybe if I was seeking a full replacement on a 7 day switch I would have.
All I really used it for is to receive my state pension every 4 weeks
There are no banks within three miles of this house any more. We all know why
There are no FREE cash machines inside that radius either.
I hadn’t tried to get cash out that way before and I was surprised (and a little disappointed) that this was not something I can do, because as I said I was unaware this was a limitation. I certainly didn’t see it in the larger print conditions (like the limits on fee free use abroad) which they did make clear.
As there are no fee free alternatives to get my pension in cash within miles of where I live I feel this is something that does devalue the account’s usefulness for me.
