I brought this up in the Monzo for U16s launch thread, but posting again here for a bit of visiblity.
My daughter has quite a long name. It’s 25 characters, including spaces, for her first name and (two word) surname.
On signing her up for an Under 16s account, the system automatically abbreviated the first part of her surname, which ain’t right. After a couple of attempts, we’ve ended up with her preferred name being her first initial and surname, but that’s not really ideal either - here’s how her account shows up on my homescreen:
This prehistoric thread suggests a 23 character limit for names on embossed cards, but as cards aren’t embossed anymore, is there scope to increase this - or is it a limit set by Mastercard? (It’s not like Monzo has decades of technical debt to worry about here!)
And even if there has to be a limit, it feels like there should be a better way to handle names that exceed it - offering a choice in how it should be truncated; or having a first initial on the card but still referring to the customer by their full first name in the app.
I’m sure part of the reason Monzo are offering accounts for children is to encourage them to stay as customers as adults - first impressions (like getting their name right) will probably help with that!
