Barclays still refusing direct debits from Monzo

I’ve recently opened a Barclaycard (as it has a 0% balance transfer offer with 0% fee). Tried to set up a monthly DD to pay it off from my Monzo account, and the app refused to recognise the details despite them being 100% correct. I searched on this forum and this appears to be a regular issue with Barclays simply refusing to recognise Monzo bank accounts. I was forced to set up a DD from my Natwest account instead - and set up a standing order from my Monzo to that every month. A pain and completely unnecessary.

I can’t quite believe it’s 2026 and we’re still having these issues. Trust me, I would rather not have had to open a Barclaycard but it had the best balance transfer offer I needed. Barclays are stuck in the Stone Ages.

You can do it via the website, it’s just coding in the app that rejects it.

Login via the website and you’ll be able to use Monzo there.

Can’t - they’ve disabled the ability to log in Barclaycard via the website, for new customers - only way is to go via the app.

It’s not just Monzo, they also won’t accept Starling or Chase in the app either (possibly others too)

It’s there.

As I said, you can’t. Click on your link, then select ‘register your account’ at the bottom right. You’ll come to a splash page that explains:

It’s no longer possible to register for online servicing – find how to use the Barclaycard app to check your transactions and statements, pay your bill and more.’

I’ve just tried to get in with my 16 digit Barclaycard number (bearing in mind I’m not registered for the website, as I can’t) and it still won’t let me in.

What happens if you don’t have a smartphone? seems a crazy way to manage an account.

I would raise a complaint with them

It’s the same with Virgin credit cards. You can no longer manage them online; you have to use the app.

More reason to boycott Barclays. Their core banking is always so crap!

You’d think being one of the bigger banks globally, they’d have much better tech.

I was reading this wondering why I haven’t come up against this issue - turns out your experience here depends on your Monzo sort code.

We have one account with a 04-00-03 code and another with a 04-00-04 code. Only the 03 code is accepted by Barclaycard.

I have an 03 sort code and it doesn’t work for me

No surprise tbf, the bigger they are the more archaic their systems are, the harder to implement any updates.

Hang on a second, problem in chair not in computer. I wonder if the OP is hitting the same thing too?

That first box is asking you to confirm your EXISTING account details.

The box below is where you actually need to put in your new Monzo details and both codes are accepted there for me.

You can setup a standing order to pay from Monzo straight to your Barclaycard. I know it’s not as good as the direct debit option but saves having to transfer to another bank, to pay the direct debit.

Well spotted, however if you do that part correctly you then get this error with a Monzo sort code:

Yes, and that’s the same error code I got when trying to set up the DD for the first time (i.e. not changing from one DD to a Monzo DD).

Just tried it again there and exactly the same.

Looks like a persistent issue with Barclays that’s been happening for years.

The solution people found back then, use one banking which is difficult if they’re not letting people register now

Monzo, Chase and Revolut don’t work via the app.
