What's the Last Bit of Tech You Bought?

Yeah I can’t say I have used mine for security purposes yet but the peace of mind is certainly helpful, I use mine mostly for seeing who is coming and going.

I am pretty sure a mate of mine doesn’t even use Wifi for his Ring cameras so that is one of the benefits of those I guess. Don’t nessecarily quote me on that though. He has worked from home for about 18 months now and so remote access to security systems isn’t too much of a fuss for him, he just has a storage tower block and stores it all there and deletes it daily. He uses his a lot more for security as he lives in an area where thieving and house intrusion is a little more rife so it must be a pretty effective system he operates.

If you carry your iPhone in your pocket, your body heat will be sufficient to keep it working. You’ll also be able to take it out for 5-10 minutes to take photos, before that heat dissipates and it switches itself off.

I took mine skiing in temperatures of -15 degrees c last year, and was able to take many perfectly good pictures - and it only switched itself off once.

Some, but not all, of their devices can be connected via Ethernet.

In relation to their doorbells, only their top of the range £349 doorbell can.

I’ve been playing about with this for a few days now and I’m really impressed with it!

The cameras are a big step up from what was already a really solid snapper. The 50x zoom is insane. Granted it’s not something you’d use in day to day life, but you can be safe in the knowledge that photos taken at more standard zoom lengths like 5x or 10x will look great. I need to have a play about with the 108MP mode too.

Both of these images were taken stood in exactly the same spot :exploding_head:

And as for 5G, wow this is a complete game changer! I wasn’t expecting to get these speeds at home. In my mind 5G is still something you only get in the centre of London, but this is enough for me to ditch BT Broadband when our contract ends.

That zoom is incredible!

I just had a Nest Hello fitted yesterday. So far so good. Not sure if it’s an iPhone thing but it’s not super quick to connect when I open the app but if I ask my Google Display to show me the front door it’s instant. Weird.

Great speeds! Which network are you on?

I’m on Three.

I know they were having lots of issues with network congestion in busy areas, hopefully this puts them all to bed now.

A bit out of the ordinary but I’ve just bought the iPhone SE after receiving the Note20 Ultra and not liking it, and I’m replacing my iPhone 11 Pro with the SE.

It’s a very good phone for the price and you don’t realise how big and unnecessarily complicated some phones can get until you go back to a phone like this.

I’ve ordered Nest products for our new house, you can use Hoobs to plug it in to HomeKit and have most of the functionality!

Really simple to set up apparently, I’ll update on how easy once/if our purchase actually goes through any time soon

Speaking of Nest, does anyone use there thermostat? Kinda tempted but not sure it’s worth it

I have the thermostat and it works well. Really easy to self install as well.
Best feature is turning your heating off when there’s no one in the house, for that alone it’s saved me. Better than a basic timer or routine.

Oh really? What thermostat do you have? This is the thing that bothers me, I have one ordered but I don’t want to fork out to have it installed when I’m quite a technical person.

Edit: I just watched this video which makes it look super easy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHKD-9uI24I

But what about the heatlink?

Ahh im an idiot, thats for America and they don’t need a heat link  Not sure I like the idea of playing near the boiler, could get expensive :joy:

I have a nest thermostat too and I love it. We’ve saved so much with its eco mode :leaves:

Our heat link stopped working the other week and I dreaded the cost of getting a replacement and having it reinstalled. I thought I’d try my luck with Google support and the level of service I received was first class.

Not only do you yet a personal advisor assigned to you but they do video calls with you to help diagnose the issue. They actually chase you for bits and pieces instead of the reverse too.

In the end they paid for everything. Replacement part and the cost of the plumber who originally diagnosed the issue and again when they returned to install the replacement heat link.

In addition to this they gave me a free stand too that are around £40 as we had a cheap Chinese knockoff one.

So even if things do go wrong, you’ll be well looked after.

We just had a basic thermostat, like one with a little section you flip down for more buttons but hell on earth to program :joy:
Couldn’t wait to rip it off the wall. The heat link from Nest looks so smart in comparison.
The app guides you step by step in installation, guiding you to take pictures and you even get little wire label stickers in the box to keep track of things.
Honestly couldn’t have been easier :+1:

oh maybe ill give it a bash then  Thanks

What is the upload speed?

Also a dedicated 5G router may get better speeds, I was waiting for 3 to roll out 5g in my area so i could use it as broadband but it looks like I’ll be getting fttp before that happens as fttp is going live soon.

Yes! I particularly love it telling me how much energy we’ve not used every month. After it learns your behaviour, it’s rare you need to make drastic adjustments!
