What phone do you use?

Argos and weirdly, WHSmiths in many train stations have them in stock instantly.

They are very much worth the money if the normal EarPods fit you.

I recently bought an LG G6 outright. I love the huge screen and the way the device feels in hand, am really happy with the purchase and am enjoying Android Nougat.

That’s unexpected - if they were out of stock on Apple’s official website I didn’t expect third-party retailers to have them.

Well thanks now you can feel guilty that I’ll spend 150£ more than I should’ve next time I see an Argos store. :joy:

I wonder what the split is between Android and iOS is in this thread

Let’s make a poll

I’m on a good ol’ Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505), running Android 5.0.1. I would love to get a more modern device, but my big reason for using Monzo is budgeting and visualising my spending habits which, given that I’m a student, is rather important to keep a positive cash flow.

Here’s hoping I’ll be able to bag an upgrade soon enough, but with a sim-only deal of £7.99 per month, there’s not really much I can do about a handset without increasing costs of which I can’t afford.

Carriers often do reasonably good deals on handsets - for example I recently got my iPhone 7 32GB from Three at 21£/month for 6 months and then 42£ (24 month contract) - that gives you unlimited calls and 12GB of data. In total that’s around 882£ paid over 24 months - that’s not bad IMO, and I’m sure you can go even cheaper if you choose the previous year’s device (iPhone 6s, etc).

If you want to pay for your phone over time, apple do a pretty good deal at 0% including applecare https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

The benefit of not locked to any carrier, and you pay the same as the cash price.

Available only at an Apple Store though - that was the deal breaker for me, as I didn’t have time to take the train to another city just to get an iPhone. :sob:

Yeah not available in the boonies

Can’t wait to move to London once I’m done with my current job.

Aha, I could definitely not afford £21 per month, let alone £42. I’ve never used 12GB of data in a month (I’m on 1GB month, and usually use only about half of it) with 1000 minutes and unlimited texts for £7.99, with a handset that was bought outright. Seeing as the Galaxy S4 is still very similar to most modern devices hardware-wise, I see little reason in upgrading until developers drop support for Android 5.0.1.

That, and I have no desire for an iPhone, though I do admit I like the look of iOS.

It’s good to pay for what you use, I hate being locked into those handset “deals”.

I went sim only and never looked back, I’ve been on EE for a few years now and for the past two I’ve paid £24.99 a month. Unlimited mins/texts, last year I was on 15GB. Then when I was about to leave for more data on BT, they doubled the data to 30GB for the same price.

It’s great because I barely ever have to turn on wifi. Which equals a bit of saved battery life, and less hassle. EE’s 4G reaches me almost everywhere. I think this will become norm for most, eventually; as prices inevitably drop and data packages increase.

I very much agree. Rather than get a contract like that, I save what I would be spending (eg £15 per month), and after a year, I can buy a somewhat decent phone outright with £180 saved up. Sure, £180 won’t get you the likes of an iPhone, but it sure is nice knowing that I own the phone in my hand.

Also, with a rolling sim-only monthly deal, you can cancel whenever. If I can no longer afford the £7.99, I don’t have to. Whereas with a contract, I’d be tied into it whether I could afford it or not.

30GB mobile data?! What do you even do with that? :open_mouth:

Haha. All the things you’d do on wifi I guess! Stream video and music all I like, that kind of thing.

It’s just pretty handy not to have to try connect to wifi’s wherever you go, my 4G is, 90% of the time, faster too!

I dislike having things in my ears so I wouldn’t be any good with AirPods - however, if the Pixel XL 2 really doesn’t have a headphone jack, I’ll need to invest in some decent over-ear Bluetooth headphones.

@simonb I am a fan of the Bose headphones, they are around-ear (so they cup the entire ear rather than pressing down on it which is uncomfortable especially if you’re wearing specs) and super comfortable.

Bit pricey, but great quality and sound.

Definitely another vote for the Bose noise cancelling ones. Makes my long tube journey so much more bearable.
