Never understood what any of that means :joy:

x265 better basically :+1: it’s what is used for 4k mostly but it is smaller files at higher quality with a better colour range over compressed x264.
One example I had at 1080p was a very good very large copy of a film with dark scenes in a tunnel with lights which had a lot of banding/halo issues in MPEG-4, the equiv HEVC film at less than half the size had none of the issues of banding at all.
There was issues with codec support years ago but now everything that runs 4k will decode without issue and phones have no issues with it.

Not sure what yts used but that’s my go to. :joy:

A lot of the groups use x265/HEVC now as it is superior in nearly all ways other than device playback support (old devices)

The movies, or you? :joy:

I have been waiting to rewatch on Disney+ as they did a 4k version for Alien but I havent checked if Aliens has gone up yet.

Alien hasn’t aged well, despite the unique storyline, unique sets and xeno-shots.
We watched it as a family recently thinking the kids would be behind the sofa. They basically laughed at it. Even the stomach scene.

But Aliens is still in the top 5 sequels-that-were-better-than-the-original:

  • The Empire Strikes Back (in release order only, technically not ‘2’ in the story timeline)
  • Aliens
  • Terminator 2
  • Spiderman 2
  • Tron Legacy

Best reboots:

  • The Dark Knight - Heath’s Joker…
  • Star Trek (JJ Abrams) - jeez, this one is a ride and a half with time-travelling Eric Bana
  • Man of Steel - Best superhero movie story EVER - Michael Shannon is just pure, driven purpose.
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (JJ again) - shivers when the MFalcon loops again
  • Mad Max: Fury Road - visually beyond belief. Stunning, stunning, stunning

Not Joker 2 that’s for sure!

Wolfs - 4.8/10 - Just a bit meh really. Not sure what it was trying to be or do, other than having a pair of good friends together on screen. They spend the first half talking over each other which gets a bit jarring. Quite fast paced dialogue which misses the mark when it’s not Sorkin.

That’s two in a row fails from Apple on films (The Instigators was much much worse), which is a surprise as they usually go for quality over quantity.

Saw it on Sunday. There is literally no point to it until the last 5 minutes. And while it slowly gets there through imaginary sequences, none of which have any substantial action, there’s too much singing. Way too much.

It’s like the success of Joker - in itself a film that didn’t need a sequel - forced the sequel upon Todd Philips who thought “I have to make this tank” and sabotaged it.

I won’t be re-watching this one :-1:

Just watched ‘Speak No Evil’ starring James McAvoy.

I’m a huge fan of his anyway but really enjoyed this. Couldn’t relax for a second!

He’s very broad and muscly, clearly worked out for the role.

Thank you. I shall try that out in conversation with my much younger relatives, so they can have a giggle at my attempts to speak yoof.

I’m 59. I’m increasingly broad around the waist. Also, increasingly, I can’t work anything out.
