Turning off debit card top-ups for new users

if people want them why shouldn’t they have them, the discussion is about how much it costs Monzo isn’t it ? - if Monzo charge a fee for a choice a customer wants and there is a free option with bank transfers its then up to the customer to decide if they want to pay the cost - I would have no objection to keeping the convenience of top ups for all - if the costs are covered by the end user - I haven’t used top ups since dec last year

@anon61087081 mentioned that this might not be possible? I have no idea though…

It’s kind of irrelevant isn’t it? Since -

Wholehearted agree with this analysis.

“Hey folks. You got two options to pay money into your Monzo account. They’re basically the same. One involves opening your Monzo app. The other involves you opening your other bank’s app. The only difference is the first way costs you money, the second way is completely free.”

“We’ll use the option which costs us money please, thank you”

Like I said, moronic.

Transferwise have higher fees for card based transfers, so I guess there’s a way for Monzo to achieve the same thing?

So are you saying Monzo would rather charge everyone a fee?

I genuinely don’t know how much of what @anon61087081 said is true (no offence).

If there is an option which means customers pay to top up via card, and bank transfers are free, then yeah - I can’t see anyone disagreeing with that process!

I’m saying that Monzo don’t want to charge anyone a fee - & it sounds like they wouldn’t.

For what it’s worth, I’m guessing that Monzo can’t reveal the exact fee that they’re paying to accept card top ups so they couldn’t pass the charge onto users.

But… If they aren’t going to charge anyone a fee… and they don’t want to be accused of “bait and switch” by removing card top ups altogether…

What option is left?

They’re asking us to suggest alternative solutions

Have I missed a 3rd suggestion somewhere?

I was working on the basis that on some level - They would have to do one of the two things I’ve just mentioned?

There’s been more than one but here’s mine for example.

Why? Be creative  or don’t but I don’t think it’s worth suggesting either of those things because the team’s obviously considered both of them already.

Just curious, why would not Monzo incentivise reduction in card top ups by dealing with the core issue - salary not being paid to Monzo?

For instance, if there could be some unique benefits to the customers that have a salary with Monzo (for instance, a £400 international withdrawal allowance [instead of £200] or a overdraft charge of 40p [isntead of 50p], a reduced international transfer fee by, say, 5%, etc.)?

This will not only solve the issue with top ups (to an extent, not completely of course), but also reduce the average cost per customer due to having more of them with salary paid.

After all, very often people are just too lazy to do something if there are no incentives for it (saying that this slows the development of new features is, of course, not helpful).

I am simply curious if any of these could potentially work.

I’m all for creativity, but maybe it’s the heat, maybe it’s because it’s Friday, or maybe I’m just too narrow minded (all 3 are entirely possible right now), but I can’t think of any way that Monzo can turn off debit card top ups without being accused of “bait and switch” (something I don’t agree with, but appreciate others do).

But then if you are suggestion they don’t want to charge a fee for anything either? Well… I’m failing to see a way around either of those if I’m honest.

Do you have any suggestions @alexs?

Honour your (presumably costed) promise that upgrading to a current account would mean no reduction in features, including a fee–free top–up option, and just accept that these customers are fundamentally more likely to be loss–making in the medium term.

Then work harder to offset the cost with new users who don’t have a top–up option.

24 hour delay on card payments being available in account?

Just yes!

Well… yeah - But then why does this thread exist? :joy:

I guess you could actively encourage people not to by putting hurdles in the way - But I think they would come under pressure for not treating customers equally etc etc.

Haha indeed. It seems to me to partly exist for people to (actually) argue that they want to pay to transfer their own money around the banking system :rofl: (see the post above yours)

It would be just as equal as now, some customers have the feature, some don’t
