The Monzo app is changing: we've had a makeover!

I find the new app far less intuitive. Everything felt in its place before, now I feel like I’m swiping and clicking everywhere - it feels like there’s too much going on. Also why is there no dark mode? It’s horrible.

My biggest issue though is the pulse bar being removed. Why can’t there be an option like in my other bank where if I swipe to the left slightly it’ll reveal on the side pane my balance to show it increasing and decreasing with payments. Now all I have is the total sum at the top and it seems like the closing balance for each day.

I know nobody likes change and you can’t please everyone but I’m really not liking this upgrade one bit :frowning:

Sorry, I wasn’t refering to the left to spend specifically, but rather the colour changing feature along with the little line showing how far through you are. It should go amber then red if you’ve spent more than you should i.e. are likely to run out of money. So basically what it should be doing is what you’re currently doing manually (figuring out if you’re likely to run out based on what you’ve spent at what point in the month).

I know what you’re getting at, but no I don’t find it useful as I might not just be trying to get to the end of the month without being overdrawn or in the amber or red. I might be trying to save each month what I’ve got left as a balance, so it might always be green and all it’ll show me is that it’s green, not what level of green it is in comparison to the same stage of previous months.

I’m finding the update frustrating - I have a joint and a current account, but only use the joint account. Now, when I open the app, it seems to default to my unused current account rather than going straight to my joint account as it did before the update.

It would be great if we could select our primary account, or re-order the accounts in the home screen so that the one we chose would be the default.

Second dark mode for iOS too - I’ve found the move to dark mode really helps with chronic migraine, so I’m less likely to spend time in the app if it’s glaring white.

Thanks

Ah yes, that makes sense  Almost like they need silver and gold for if you’re doing better! I don’t know how it’s actually calculated, whether it uses previous months or if it just uses your rate of spending so far during this month.

I’m totally in the camp that doesn’t like this update.

The graph was great to track spending, now it’s gone.

The weird slide down the transactions to view your cards is less convenient that just having a separate tab for you card details coupled with the fact there’s 2 different animations as you scroll down further.

The app itself looks more out dated and less up to date than the original (this was repeated by 3 other Monzo users in my office today when we talked about the update).

The app no longer ‘feels’ like part of the OS. Its clearly now a global app that’s lost the styling of something that feels a part of iOS. This is a major downer for me, it’s now barely an upgrade from my legacy banks effort, it actually looks less integrated than theirs!

Still on the old version - don’t bring back the graph, waste of space, never used it.

There you go, Monzo can’t please everyone and they certainly can’t maintain 2, 3 or 20 different UI versions to keep forum members happy.

It’s true they can’t please everyone, but the app is the only way dealing with your Monzo account. Turn people off and their only option is to go elsewhere.

I’ve just upgraded from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 11 pro. One thing I can say for sure is that the new app works so much better on the new phone, so much quicker and smoother to use. Has Monzo tested whether the app works effectively on older phones in detail? Obviously I would expect so but it just doesn’t feel like a good user experience on a 3 year phone

This is what the new 3.0 polishes look like in the next release.

  • Card has your name on it
  • Feed is more condensed and doesn’t have the lines
  • Card control colours changed the shade of blue
  • Blue pill at the top changed colour/gradient (for the worse, imo)

Also when you’re on Pots the feed is now in the correct style without the grey from before which is nice. Next the need to tackle the settings but its getting more and more polished which is great.

Agreed, what bugs me most is that the colour doesn’t even match the lagoon blue card :sob:

You sure it’s more condensed? Pretty sure the lines have just been removed.

I preferred the colour how it was too. It didn’t feel quite so obtrusive before.

My eyes are actually pulled to the button/pill over anything else now, where my eyes were drawn to the total amount in my account previously.

True. I prefer it like this, I hope it doesn’t get condensed.

Some nice changes. Only missing one useful function.

Previously when you scrolled down through payments in the home tab you could not only see the total spent for a specific day, but also the total money you had on your account at any specific point.

That was really useful, please consider bring it back. Ta

Hi, I like the new app now I am getting used to it. Is it possible to reorder my pots by drag and drop?

Okay, there’s two bits of functionality that have gone which were kind of important for me.
I didn’t care about the graph, but I use YNAB, and reconciling was so much easier when I could see what the balance was at the end of a given day, please can that be brought back? It was literally the most used thing for me.

Also it’s completely unhelpful that if I scroll through my list of transactions, it hides what my actual balance is. Again, I need to be able to see that easily to reconcile in YNAB. Why can’t the transaction list maximise to just under the balance amount instead of hiding the whole screen underneath? Everyone’s going on about excellent UI, but that doesn’t seem like good UI to me, I’m in a banking app where I can no longer see my balance and transactions at the same time.

I actually don’t use pots or savings pots right now, so honestly, the old version was far more useful for me. If I’m missing some functionality or how to do things please educate me.

As an example of how I used the balance on a given day; I’m just about to reconcile and budget my just-arrived pay packet. Last time I reconciled, let’s say my balance was £50.64. So all I’d do in Monzo is scroll through the days until I found the day my balance was that figure. Then I’d check each transaction and add where I’d missed it from YNAB. Now I can’t do that, I have to look at the transactions themselves; with multiple TFL amounts of the same amount each day, and the same lunch spend each day, that proves confusing and takes longer.

Hi Gary

Welcome to the community!

On this pot, not yet, but it is the most voted for idea on the forum so likely will be along next:
