The Eurovision Song Contest

I hope they have a spare! Or can someone send them a Monzo Plushie?

I found it really uncomfortable. Like a flashback to awkward comedy films from the 00’s.

Anyone had a bet on this year?

The fact the Netherlands got disqualified and the Irish act talked about how they cried when Israel qualified is pretty good proof just how much politics influenced this one

Just to clarify they said Netherlands got disqualified because of what he did towards a Eurovision member of staff and she reported him to the police, it wasn’t political.

But when we acknowledge this at the same time as admitting had their been an option to vote for a Palestinian performance, it would’ve got more votes, is it true?

What’s the specific rule regarding politics?

Before I embarrass myself

Took about 10 seconds for that to happen

I’m going to have to ask you to elaborate.

Embarrass wasn’t the right word, my bad, but I did think it was pretty funny to go from asking about the rules of politics talk to straight into nazis

Is politics not allowed on this forum? Genuine question.

Personally, I love all the politics. Let’s face it, most of the songs are pretty rubbish, and will never be listened to again - so half the fun of Eurovision is all the other stuff. Including politics.

I agree. Lets not have an opinion about anything ever. Blue is blue. Grass smells of grass.

In the context of this thread I’d say the fault for this lies with Eurovision.

There is no greater political entity than a state.

If it was meant to be just a song contest there’d be no need for contestants to represent a state, and no need for voting per country.

And, just for the sake of completeness, there’s no more overt political symbol than a flag.

It doesn’t really represent anything though, does it? If any nation really cared they would take it seriously.

Imagine Ed Sheeran Vs Kylie Minogue Vs whoever is huge in Latvia vs…

…you get it.

It’s a full on joke dressed as a political time bomb covered in glitter… If anything, allowing Israel to compete probably increased viewership.

Is your preference to the left or to the right?

For me, politics and Eurovision go hand in hand - it’s impossible not to think about politics when discussing the results.

Quite interesting now that they break down the jury results. Two of the UK jurors ranked Israel in 23rd and 24th place out of 25. Israel’s song wasn’t my favourite, but it’s surprising to see two industry experts rank this song as pretty much the worst. One juror ranked it as 6. That’s quite a range.

I think there’s a big difference this year between the ‘standard’ Eurovision politics - Greece and Cyprus always voting for each other, Scandinavia supporting each other etc. with this years 'Country X should not be allowed to take part, Country Y has been banned because they spoke out about Country X (even though that didn’t actually happen etc.etc)

It smells of TV. People thing X Factor was a singing competition, where it was actually a TV show. It’s sensationalism. And it’s great TV.

You sound like a politician. Israel should not be allowed to take part because they’re invading Palestine. Let’s NOT get into politics but don’t pretend this isn’t happening.

Least favourite comment here but not everyone in Isreal wanted this.
