The Co-operative Bank chat

Yes, but what platform will they use? Coventry app supports the present day equivalent of what I gather was the excellent Coventry First account. Presently those accounts only have cash cards but they still support DD etc. The debit cards were dropped two or three years back so might just be a matter of re-enabling the code and restart issuing debit cards.

CF itself didn’t have an app as far as I know.

The Coventry withdrew debit cards in 2019.

I recall Coventry BS using a piece of paper with a grid of numbers on as its 2FA for online banking. Different times.

This seems a bit ‘out of the frying pan, into the fire’ for Co-op customers.

Coventry BS only have savings and mortgages now, and previously scrapped their current accounts, so are they going to be interested in anything else from the Co-op bank other than savings and mortgages? Probably not.

It doesn’t look like they’ve got a modern ‘tech stack’ that they’ll be importing Co-op customers onto and the existing platform co-op customers are on is a bit creaky as well so needs investment. And that’s before we even get onto the Smile customers.

My guess is that they will use a souped up version of the co-op software for everything. It has already absorbed the Britannia Building Society so does BS type things. If CF had still been operating, I’d have said they’d likely have gone that way.

Just had the confirmation email from Co-op.

Two brands to start separate for some time to come.

Happening early 2025.

Seems to be running slower than Nationwide/Virgin with Virgin part of Nationwide as of last week.

Checked my credit file today and noticed an account from the Co-Op is showing on there around the time I opened my account with them. They would only give me a Cashminder account at the time and I quickly CASS’ed it as it was very poor.

An account has randomly appeared on my file today stating I used £58 of an overdraft and when I contacted them, they’re telling me the account was closed in July 2023 and sold to Link. I’ve not received any correspondence from either the Co-Op nor Link about this ; I know categorically it’s not anything related to me. Also odd how it’s just showing on my report now too!

I’ll keep you all posted on this one!

Did you set any direct debits to it? They may have made the payment hence overdrawn?

That’ll be a default if it’s been sold to another company.

Definitely no direct debits set up on it which just adds to the mystery!

Cashminder accounts supposedly can’t go overdrawn and definitely don’t come with an overdraft limit as it’s their basic bank account. I had one for years and it never appeared on credit files.

The last 4 digits of the account number that is showing on my credit report also doesn’t match the last 4 digits of the account number for the account I had either.

You mean the coop are incompetent enough to have potentially merged two customers together by accident?

Colour me shooketh

That’s not always the case, they don’t always align.

You could, however, compare to the closed account in your closed accounts list on your report (if it was ever added).

Nationwide/VM was unprecedented in its speed but this is still very quick if they get the transaction done in Q1.

Applied for an account as this is basically the last switch I haven’t done. I was a Smile customer for years and it doesn’t look like things have changed much…
