So it’s 2023, and what’s a better way to start than with a Big Poll?!
Over here, I offered some of my predictions for the year ahead, but more importantly it’s time to find out what the community wants from Monzo in 2023… and what we think might actually happen in Monzo World!
As per last year, two sets of polls for our collective delight:
firstly to find out what the Community wants from Monzo in 2023.
then to see what we actually think will happen.
I’ve based the options on previous Big Polls, ideas posted on the forum and the wiki we had to crowdsource ideas for the Christmas Big Poll (now a New Year poll, obvs). The first poll is much more about the product, the second one includes corporate and business updates, too!
And this year, I’ve had a go at dividing into Monzo global features (shared by UK/US), then specific features for each market.
Ready, set, happy new poll!

Monzo multi-device. I think this is the thing that would bring me back. Being able to use trends across both an iPad & iOS device at the same time, a deeper level of insights and analytics and data would be next level
Plus** - While you could argue plus is worth it for the aggregation alone I really think it’s gone stale - none of what it has is anywhere near market leading or innovative now.
Pot feeds - I might have missed it, but I would’ve voted if it was there. Being able to click into a Pot and see all transactions (e.g. bills pot etc)
Commercial Who knows what Monzo will do but I suspect 2023 will be a bonfire of startups and new(ish!) entrants and a merge/acquisition of a few. I suspect that a number of aggregators will become one or two.
I don’t know the in’s and out’s, according to that government page - yes. But i think it’s extraordinarily unlikely - especially for a private company where the requirements are a lot lower.
I haven’t been using iOS for a few weeks, but my recollection is this is also a significant issue on iOS. From memory iOS does put text at the bottom of the transaction page which contains the original reference. But this gets modified when you use the notes field (its not uncoupled - which is what it really should be).
From what I can tell the “Description” field contains the original transfer reference and this doesn’t get modified when you edit the Notes field. You can access the Description field by downloading statement in CSV format, and I believe also via the API.
But for some reason (which I’ve never seen explained by someone from Monzo) we don’t see don’t see the Description field in the app (applies to both iOS and Android). This is bonkers to me.
My guess at what’s happening is
When a transaction happens, the reference text is written to a) Description field and b) Notes field. The Notes field is obviously user-editable but I suspect the Description field is read only.
On iOS, the text at the bottom of the transaction page points to the Notes field rather than the Description field (seems silly to me).
My request here would be to show us the description field (original reference) in the app and also don’t bother copying the reference text into the notes field. I feel the notes field should be supplementary information, not duplication of the description field.
recently moved from another bank. tried to pay £900 cash in the other day into my Monzo knowing there is like £1,000+ limit every 6 months which is already weird tbh, but when I went into the paypoint shop the limit was like £300 maximum pay in, or £150, I cannot remember. either way it’s pretty pointless for me. So I will still use TSB at the post office to pay in any amount of cash for free with a limit of £1,500 per day or £10k per year. And I will use Starling to cash in cheques via the camera and their app. What keeps me at Monzo vs Revolut and Starling? Monzo has the option of a Monzo Flex credit card type of card, Starling does not, Monzo has virtual cards and pots Starling did not, but now does. Would love Monzo to offer higher cash deposits allowance and post office integration for cash deposits. Not going to lie, as soon as one fintech bank can offer all the facilities of a traditional bank and also at the same time compete in the usually fintech ways, I’ll probably move to that bank because in the end you just hope to do all your banking in one app, at least for me that is the case. So I believe it’s good to focus on these features, cash deposits, cheque imaging as rare as they are, when you do need to use them it’s a game changer if it’s easy.
I know this is a late response but, yes. Not filing on time is a criminal offence. The automatic companies house fines are separate to any criminal investigation which would be done by HMRC, although in reality this is only pursued for egregious breaches and they’d send warnings over several months to ‘file now before we take action’ etc. Late accounts are very common (despite technically being criminal).
The main effect is that suppliers may question you or stop working with you as it will raise a flag in due diligence checks.
