Starling are linked up to the current account switching system, so when you say hassle in swapping, I don’t think it’s a big issue. It seems very encompassing, moving standing orders and balance, shutting down old account etc…

I almost used it but the shutting down old account goes 1 too far

Did they give an option to not shut down your old account?

So some of you must have had your cards by now… Thoughts? What do they do well? Is there something they are excelling at that we can learn from?

We firmly believe here at Monzo that competition is a good thing. It keeps us on our toes and makes us work harder! After all, nobody wants to get complacent, and we of course know how hard it is to build a bank and so we offer them our congratulations :grinning:

If I being honest, it’s nothing special.

  1. Their notifications about spending work about 60% of the time
  2. when withdrawing cash, you still receive a message to say you maybe charged by the card issuer
  3. their app has limited functionality at the moment. The pie chart only shows current day spending which is alittle pointless for me. This makes it hard to say how much you have spent in a month and payments aren’t broken down by category so very much like a traditional bank account.

On the positive side, the card seems to work everywhere including contactless. The account set up progress is so quick and easy - kind of forget your setting up a bank account, more like registering for Facebook!!

The account opening process was flawless and super fast. Apart from that… no killer feature just yet. Nice to use current account switching guarantee but I’m not switching fully away from my legacy bank until Monzo anyway.

Monzo is significantly ahead of Starling in everything except of course there’s no current account yet

Yes they do, all part of the switch process

Fully agree with this

The card also looks pretty strong

Just opened my Starling account. So far, the onboarding process has been excellent. I’m very impressed by it. I’ll update with more details on what it’s like to use when I receive my card.

Oh, and once I get my free pass, I’ll be sure to share it here.

Off out on my first trip with the Starling card. Wish me luck!

Update
I’ve returned, and I’m not overly impressed. I know Monzo have a lot of crowd sourced information for merchants, but I was still expecting something better than this with Starling.

It states ā€œTrafford Centreā€ but was the petrol station on site. I believe when I started using Monzo this was attributed as ā€œTrafford Centreā€ too, but I’ve pushed updates to Monzo on this a few times.

I don’t like how they’ve greyed out the pence in the transaction detail. I get what they’re trying to do – focus on the significant digits. But in this case it gives the wrong outcome, as your transaction is much closer to Ā£3 than Ā£2. This kind of display is misleading.

In Monzo balance and Daily Spend on my Android the pounds are big and bold in white and pence are small and grey so similar issue.

I’m not sure which approach is best - hiding the pence or displaying them subtly (I wouldn’t want them displayed in the same font & colour as pounds) - so this seems subjective to me.

Here’s Hugo’s explanation for Monzo’s design -

I’d want to see the full value but the weird part here for me is that they are the same height and the colours are different. It hurts my eyes trying to read it.

Here is a screenshot of an older Monzo transaction for the same merchant, for the same amount (creature of habit it seems :see_no_evil:)

Sorry another quick update, I’ve checked the Starling transaction from before and it’s updated with richer information! I think Starling are stalking these here parts :eyes::mag:

I have been using starling, but the app while is quick, not as quick and as fluid as Monzo. It also feels a little basic, its great it has all the banking features, but it feels like any other normal banking app, but with live push notifications. They haven’t really added anything stand out. I’m sure it will get better in time, but I’ve switched back to Monzo for my day to day spending.

Better:
it’s available
0.5% interest

worse:
a bit boring - where are the smileys?
they’re about to reduce the interest over 2k
no golden tickets

They’re fast to put in the merchant logo but not the map pin. If you’re calling every Tesco transaction ā€œTescoā€ without any other detail, it’s not really helping…

I’ve suggested that at the very least they list the merchant name as a legacy bank would show it somewhere at the detailed description page but nothing’s been done so far.
