Someone phished me

Yes it’s true. You could wake up with 700 credit loans owed.

Even a Mail man can get your name and address along with your dob

I suppose if your address hasn’t changed in the last 3 years (lenders usually ask for that much address history), and you have enough info on your credit file, they could sign up for a credit card in your name - I don’t think Amex asked more from me than name, dob, address history and salary (they don’t verify that usually)

They’d have to wait outside your door every day as I don’t think they could redirect the card.

Might be wrong though but I think you can get CIFAS protective registration if you’re really worried. It does cost money though

Cifas is closed.

Payday loans could be transferred into a random bank without having to wait for any post and they don’t even ask for a job just name and dob and address

And a bank account in the name matching the application.

You’re scaremongering.

What do you mean they’re closed? You can still sign up for protective registration.

Not for a credit card, they don’t. But again, waiting outside the door or having an insider in that specific Delivery Office applies

For postal. Only over the phone but wouldn’t monzo close your account if you got a cifas?

They don’t. I could get a loan paid to Ben smith with the loan being from someone called Maxine Benson

CIFAS protective registration is different to a CIFAS fraud marker. The protective registration just tells new lenders that the person in question is at risk for some reason and they need to reach out for further info before opening new accounts. It shouldn’t impact existing relationships but makes opening new ones more difficult for fraudsters and more inconvenient for the individual

Usually it’s a security question type of deal with an answer only you know. Bank or utility company or whoever will write to you to say you applied, can you say your security question. You then respond that it’s bananaspacebowlerhat1 and it’s all sorted

Or online. Are you bored again?

Yeah, I meant as it applied to payday loans.

So you recommend I join cifas?

That makes sense!

I’d say with the number of serious data breaches this info is out in the wild for millions of people anyway so not sure how much risk there is. I check my credit files every month so I don’t worry even if these, and more details have likely been stolen from me before (thanks, data breaches!). If I spot something fishy I’ll flag it. But there’s always the CIFAS stuff for £25 for two years if you’re worried

If you’re really worried it’s an option. Here’s more info about it: Protective Registration | Identity Protection Service | Cifas

If you Google someone got a loan in my name you’ll quickly see lots and lots of stuff similar where people’s lives was destroyed just from a name and dob

It says they can be hidden behind your credit rating for up to six years. In extreme cases, this can result in your bank account being closed at short notice, and the resulting problems in finding alternative banking facilities as i felt curious to what the netant guy was talking about

So if I pay the 25 this could happen to me?

That’s if you’re given a cifas marker.

What @ndrw is talking about is a protective measure.

Oh so it’s not the same? I think it could be a good idea for me to get it then stop my mind from exploding

See the info at the link

Read all the info about it to consider whether it is appropriate for you as they say you should still monitor your credit files. And as @Revels says this is different to other CIFAS markers that last for 6 years. This is for 2 years and is visible to you on credit files if I’m not much mistaken

All this information is pretty much public, you can even buy a report from 192.com

192.com tells you more about people, businesses & places in the UK than any other directory. More than just directory enquiries, 192.com lists full names, addresses, age guides, property prices, aerial photos, company & director reports, family records, & much more!

It’s pretty scary really

You can get them to remove your personal details. I had myself removed from the open register and wrote to 192 to delete my data which they’ve done. But true for most people
