Shared Tabs & Splitwise šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I’ve been a fan of Splitwise since I used it with a bunch of friends on holiday and absolutely love it (the look and feel of it, simplify, the web interface) so when Monzo released Shared Tabs I thought, perfect won’t have to use Splitwise again…but it didn’t turn out like that. I still find myself using Splitwise even though Shared Tabs can do the same thing.

Does anyone else use Splitwise instead of Shared Tabs or vice versa? Which do you prefer and what do you folks think one does ā€˜better/differently’ than the other?

 can you share why?

I’ve never used Splitwise, but if everyone in the group of friends is on Monzo, would that make it more feasible for you?

Difficult to address without knowing what you prefer from Splitwise :grinning:

I’m not 100% sure - maybe it’s familiarity or that splitwise just looks a little bit sleeker in design. Can’t quite put my finger on it.

I know there’s one thing with Bill Splitting in general that i’d like to see (being able to enter how much you’ve paid instead adjusting what others have paid) but I don’t think that’s a blocker for me.

My issue with shared tabs is that you can’t put something down as 100% to one person which is often the case (For example ā€œI’ll cover this just add it to the tabā€).

I’m not sure why it specifically doesn’t allow a 0 split.

My tab is still closing upon settling up which is the reason we have moved back to splitwise, having initially tried Monzo tabs for one month.

Not being able to do this is pretty annoying on Monzo.

Other than that my major issues with Shared Tabs are the inability to:

  • Add outgoing bank transfers.

  • Add outgoing Monzo-to-Monzo transfers.

  • Add incoming bank transfers.

  • Add incoming Monzo-to-Monzo transfers.

  • View how you or others have split a transaction after it’s been added to a Tab.

  • Edit a transaction split that you have made on a Tab.

  • Add a new member to the Tab part way through.

  • Add communal notes to Tab transactions (eg: to remind people what a transaction was for).

  • Settle a Tab without closing.

  • Settle part of a Tab (but I guess if outgoing transfers could be added to Tabs, you could use that as a workaround).

I think those features would include pretty much everything Splitwise can do.

NB: quite a few of these features (eg: communal notes, amend split amount, split outgoing and incoming bank transfers) would be really useful for Bill Splitting too !

These are the key ones for me. On the positive side for Monzo, if the other person is already on Monzo, I don’t need to convince them to sign up for another service (Splitwise). Depending on who I need to share a tab with, that can be a big advantage.

Thanks for the feedback! This was only the case in the beginning. Since the first version we have made quite a few changes. Tabs are now kept open after settling (and you can spit non-Monzo payments and split bills unevenly).

That should not be the case. I can’t reproduce the issue. It would be great if you could let me know if you are on Android or iOS and if you are on the latest version of the app please.

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback! We are still making improvements to Shared Tabs so it is super useful to hear how you use it. Some of the things you are asking for are coming / already supported. In other cases I’d be great to understand the need a little better:

  • Add outgoing bank transfers

You can do this today (recurring payments coming soon)

  • Add outgoing Monzo-to-Monzo transfers

Not currently supported but would make sense as they are similar to bank transfers

  • Add incoming bank transfers / Add incoming Monzo-to-Monzo transfers.

I would love to hear what situation you need this for

  • View how you or others have split a transaction after it’s been added to a Tab.

We are adding your part of the split so you can always see what you should pay / are owed

  • Edit a transaction split that you have made on a Tab.

For now you have to remove the bill and add it again to change the split

  • Add a new member to the Tab part way through.

Currently working on this. Coming soon!

  • Add communal notes to Tab transactions (eg: to remind people what a transaction was for).

Is this mostly needed for non-Monzo payments?

  • Settle a Tab without closing.

This is now how it works

  • Settle part of a Tab (but I guess if outgoing transfers could be added to Tabs, you could use that as a workaround).

Thanks for a fantastic reply!

Great to see that adding outgoing bank transfers and settling a Tab without closing are done (must have missed those before) and that adding outgoing Monzo-to-Monzo transfers and adding a new member to the Tab part way through are in the works.

NB: it would be useful to be able to Bill Split outgoing Monzo-to-Monzo transaction too.

To answer your questions:

  • For deposit returns.
For example: if a group of flatmates are using a Shared Tab to figure out what they each owe, it makes sense for them to add their deposit to the Shared Tab when the

  • For refunds, especially partial refunds.

  • If one person on the Shared Tab accidentally transfers another person on the Shared Tab instead of settling the Tab and they’d prefer the amount they sent to be included towards the amount they owe on the Shared Tab.

I know these sort of things could be transferred separately from the Tab, but so could any transaction and adding them to the Shared Tab would make it easier to keep track.

NB: it would also be useful to be able to Bill Split incoming transactions too for one off payments like the ones above - maybe Monzo’s great Pay Anyone by Text or Email feature could be integrated when Bill Splitting with non-Monzo users

  • Actually, I’d find this most useful for Monzo payments.

  • For Non-Monzo payments, you are able to add a title/note saying what the custom bill is for. You can then describe it adequately enough for everyone in the Shared Tab to understand exactly what it was for (eg: food for breakfast).

  • For Monzo payments, you only get the merchant name and the total cost as info about the transaction; this doesn’t always tell you enough about the transaction to remember what it was for, especially if you’re in a foreign country where you don’t know many merchants.
You don’t even get the time or location of the transaction to help you figure out where it’s from (which is why being able to view the whole transaction by clicking on it would be useful).

I can’t seem to be able to settle part of a Tab yet. I’m on iOS version 2.29.0 - is this feature in the next release?

My partner has bought two excursions whilst we are on holiday and set up a shared tab. If we settle up now will this allow for any automatic adjustments up or down to be made once the amount has settled (we are in Sri Lanka)? Or should I just wait until they have all settled?

Thanks for the clarification! My comment that ā€œThis is now how it worksā€ was referring to Settle a Tab without closing it. We don’t have support for settling a tab in less that full amount currently and not decided to prioritise it yet.

Wait to settle until the final amount has come through. It will not update automatically.

Hi. My biggest gripe with shared tabs on Android is that I can’t send request payment reminders yet. On Apple it’s all good and my mates can send the request but Android you can’t do this. I’ve spoken to Monzo Chat and even they were surprised that you couldn’t do this. What’s the hold up to releasing this on Android.

Currently using Android Beta for Samsung S8

Android is a bit behind here (we had a a few weeks with 2 iOS engineers working on tabs and only one on Android) but the week after next (v.2.32) you will be able to send payment reminders from Android phones too.

Thanks very much for this info. I’ve been trying to find out about this for weeks now!

Another reason why you wouldn’t want to completely close a tab is for people sharing flat/house, household expenses would require you to have a long standing tab open between housemates.

This is a great idea.

The ability set up a recurring payment into the Tab would also be useful (ie: you settle £X of the Tab every month).
