Payment declined but checkout said approved?

I tried to pay for something yesterday but didn’t have enough available cash. The card reader at the checkout seemed to decline the transaction so I quickly withdrew some money from my Coin Jar and went to pay again but when the sales assistant checked the till he said the transaction had gone through! I showed him the declined status in the Monzo app and then paid again in cash this time. Not sure what happened! I suspect the sales guy misread the till information.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I’ve had the opposite happen at Tesco (it shows as approved on Monzo, but declines on the POS - although it actually seems to be more like a timeout on the POS, rather than showing a decline immediately).
