Early this morning, a new direct debit appeared on my account.
I have not set up a new DD mandate recently, nor did I receive any email from any source informing me of the new DD.
The company has a similar name to one that I have a legitimate DD with, and the reference has the same last four numbers as that of the legitimate DD.
I am wondering whether to simply cancel this new DD, but don’t want to do so in case it’s meant to replace that legitimate one.
Could you advise me on what to do?
I can supply more details, but would prefer to do it through the app/chat. However, there is no option in the Help section to deal with unrecognised DDs.
Have you tried contacting that company in case they switched DD providers?
Monzo require a DD authority to set one up, they don’t just appear randomly. Most likely explanation is that the company has changed their collection partner.
I’m going to do that, but wanted to notify the bank first.
Direct debits aren’t much to worry about RE fraud. Fraudsters don’t get any gain from direct debits as payments are recalled under the guarantee.
It’ll be a merchant you already have an agreement with that’s likely either changed or renewed their payment method.
Give them a call and ask.
My time working in fraud I’ve never dealt with a direct debit being fraudulent.
Speak to the company who you think the direct debit belongs.
You don’t need to go to the app or speak to Monzo. Speak to the company, if it’s all legit then great. If not, cancel it.
You don’t need to contact the bank, you need to contact the merchant.
It’s actually the same collection partner (slightly different name), but maybe they’ve updated their system.
I would say contacting the bank makes sense too, since if a payment were taken wrongly, they would have to recover it.
No, speaking to the bank doesn’t make sense.
No money has moved; you’ve only said a direct debit is set up not taken.
Don’t want it there? Just cancel it. The end.
I had a notification last night that a new DDM was set up with Jaja Finance (for whom I already have a DDM). I just assumed it was a change at their end, although I did expect them to let me know such a change was happening…
That’s so strange, as I’ve just checked Chase and it has two active for Jaja.
One has the card number as the reference and the other a mix of numbers and letters.
Mine don’t show as two in Monzo, I think it has to take money before it appears in the list of DDs, but when I look at the details of the feed items for the “direct debit set up” items, I have a similar situation, one with just numbers, one with a mix.
Update : I contacted the merchant with whom I have the DD (Asda credit card), and they tell me it’s just an update. Whilst there are now two DDs, the old one will be cancelled.
Both are with Jaja, as I said. The original has a reference which is just the 16 digit number of my card, while the new one has an 18 digit reference, with just the last 4 corresponding to my card number.
So the only issue for me was not getting informed of the change.
The person I chatted with say they do these updates on batches, to people aren’t informed. I suggested they update the system so we are.
That said, many people won’t notice their DDs changing.
