I think it may be a relatively new process, but you’re now prompted to confirm your address and pick a card (which includes an opportunity to upsell Plus/Premium) when approaching your card expiry date.
Although not the same issue as the OP, I didn’t have a great experience when I encountered this recently (don’t mind the Plus/Premium upsell though):
