Double post apologies. I wondered if I could come up with a hack to create a virtual card and then trigger a transfer from pot > joint account > personal account to pay it instead but… no IFTTT for joint account either! Urgh. So frustrating.
What is truly maddening is that for several years this has sat stagnant with seemingly nobody at Monzo wanting to take it on. I think that there is some sort of assumption that you would have to bring everything to the joint account, when instead it’s only custom categories and virtual cards that are really necessary - all the rest is fine on the personal account (you don’t need to port the insurance product over, and so on).
What is even more maddening is that these are purely technical changes with no need to engage all the legal and regulatory stuff that having full feature-parity for the joint account would require. A purely technical team inside Monzo could implement these two features.
Back in the day, Custom Categories were the most requested feature, and there was huge fanfare when they finally landed. So I can’t square how the joint account has just been left for literally years without this single feature update. It’s tragic and infuriating.
What’s more, US joint accounts already have custom categories. It’s built and working.
These will never come up the UK until and unless Monzo fixes whatever problem they have that’s causing them to throttle joint account applications.
The radio silence is baffling, what little messaging there is is confusing and this whole situation reflects badly on Monzo.
I don’t want a Personal account. Only a Joint account. With the same features and tiers as currently offered to Personal accounts. Why this hasn’t happened or can’t happen when the JA has a sort code and an account number is bizarre.
I have no way to tell whether I am being gaslit or this is the truth .
They don’t have Plus/Premium though. I still suspect that there is either a technical challenge which is (for the time being) insurmountable, or a regulatory or pricing difficulty.
I can’t believe that Monzo don’t want to implement it, so I’m left with the impression that there is some impediment(s) which are proving troublesome.
I wonder if it is related to FCA money laundering investigations? that might explain the lack of an explanation and increased vigilance around approving joint accounts … maybe …
This is a possibility. Sadly it’s all very confusing.
I still think it’s time vs money. It doesn’t have the wider demand/income stream to make it worthwhile acting on.
Categories and export are all I care about.
This it my guess.
I don’t think it’s insurmountable though.
I think this is probably what Monzo think. I’m not sure I agree, but then I don’t have the data. I do think they need to factor in reputational issues though.
Having said all of that, I suspect they’ll do a big relaunch during the year. No evidence, just a hunch.
Nothing is if you have unlimited money and time. I guess they aren’t willing, or able, to devote the necessary resources at the moment.
This completely gets my goat, too. They deployed it in the US and despite it being one of the most requested features (and containing the joint account roll-out of the most ever requested feature on personal accounts): nada. A year ago it was “very much on the radar”. Yet, still, nothing. To re-state the obvious: you can’t really get a handle on where your money goes without being able to “bucket” it. And for a giant swathe of people basically all their family expenses are from the family joint account.
There has been a lot of speculation about how it must be a large technical issue - both historically and even in this thread. But now we know that’s clearly not the case, it would be helpful if one of the Monzo staff who frequent the forums could come and tell us why, and maybe even when this might finally reach Blighty. Perhaps @Peter_G or @denisewong could use their coral backchannel superpowers…
That was just someones theory because they believe JA are “broken”
I speculated the obvious (JA’s to be killed or relaunched as JAv2) in this post:
Then the only initial criteria at the point where you hit the ‘Open’ button has been met. Meaning once that request hits the server, server says no. Which means that a process (AI/Human) has decided that you can’t have a JA. And that’s not personal but your account has been labeled, along with many others it seems, for some reason, into the server-says-no group. And it’s that unknown reason which makes no sense. I suspect - as it has been said before - that Monzo is really throttling the numbe…

A year ago it was “very much on the radar”.
Maybe I missed it, but who/where was that? The last proper post that I remember about it was this from Jack…
Continuing the discussion from Monzonaut AMA - Jack - Product Marketing Manager:
I think I want to answer this question by first acknowledging how the community must feel about joint account features in general. I worry sometimes that it looks a little like folks’ very fair and reasonable requests to bring Plus/Premium parity to joint accounts is falling on deaf ears. We often say something like “we’ve been thinking about this!” Or “thanks for the suggestion!” and then you hear nothing more about it.
And then someone asks again, and the same things happen. But I think it’s really important to note that a lot of folks at Monzo really, really, really care about this problem and we do think about it a lot. The honest truth is that we just haven’t got round to it yet. We know there’s hundreds of things we could do to make joint accounts better (including making them compatible with Plus/Premium features!), but we’ve been busy working on Trends, Flex, the improvements we’ve brought to Flex and virtual cards on Pots and some other things too
I can’t say when we’ll properly tackle this problem – because I don’t know! But please do know it’s on our minds!
Which was basically… “Not yet”

That was just someones theory because they believe JA are “broken”
Morning!
@jackcully Is there any movement on this at all?! Don’t need specifics, but would be good to know if it has moved forward at all since the last time you posted.

maybe even when this might finally reach Blighty. Perhaps @Peter_G or @denisewong could use their coral backchannel superpowers…
Tales of my superpowers are sadly overblown. The most I could do is ask @AlanDoe (which I kinda think I’ve just done by tagging him).
@denisewong is Monzo staff though, although based on the other side of the Atlantic. (Monzonauts are flagged as Coral Crew because reasons).

Yes, she wasn’t aware of why in the other thread. I was hoping for some UK-based *naut to weigh in.
Would similarly be keen. They do seem somewhat taciturn on the UK joint account though…
