More info on the Asda issue here:
Can someone explain why these issues are even a thing? What is the point of Mastercard/Visa if retailers can target specific banks to suddenly have issues with?
I doubt the asda issue is intentional, on asda or monzo side, but more a inadvertent settings issue (probably at asdas end)
The other 2 sound like small businesses, unfortunately I’m not sure theres much Monzo can do to force them to accept their cards. Refusing the card on basis of issuing bank is almost certainly against the scheme rules, which they should be obliged to follow through their merchant bank. Actually enforcing this maybe easier said than done though
If they take contactless, don’t show Cat Cafe and Cosy Club the card, just tap it.
How are they not able to accept it?
Might be being dumb here (I get they can say they won’t) but surely as it’s mastercard it will work on their terminals?
Contactless or Apple Pay?
There can’t be any additional cost for them taking monzo.
I have been given all sorts of cards over the years, never refused one based on issuing bank
Is it that their terminals don’t accept the card or are they just refusing?
Also what would happen if you had no other form of payment?
They can selectively block cards from particular banks/providers etc. They’re not supposed to but the rules are made to be broken.
Asda have intentionally blocked the card - Monzo are presumably working with them to overcome what objection they have.
With such a distinctive card colour, it’s clear for retailers to see which bank it is and if they’ve had a few bad experiences they simply refuse to accept it.
One of the drawbacks of having such a distinguishable card I guess!
How do you know it’s intentional, rather than accidental?
There is someone on this thread or maybe fintech forum where the employee said they don’t take monzo anymore. Could just be as he knows it’s not working or they have been told they don’t.
All speculation though
This could be the post you’re referring to? The guy saying he wasn’t allowed to accept them implies that he was told so.
Yeah my thoughts. It doesn’t say the guy tried the card multiple times he just said no.
The guy behind the counter told me head office had told all asda’s not to accept the cards. The women in the cat cafe told me there is an issue where the money would leave my account but not hit there’s and then be refunded back to me. This is actually what happened in cosy club for me a few weeks ago. I could see on my app that the money had left my account so when the girl came over to say that there had been a problem with the payment she was very confused when I showed her it had left my account. When I got home I got a notification from Monzo saying refund from cosy club. We went for a drink yesterday and they no longer accept the cards.
I’ve just merged another related thread in here to keep the discussion in one place
Is it just at the pumps or is it a blanket ASDA block?
Just tried now states sale cancelled
Seems to be PAP and Kiosks, in store fine
From a legal perspective, could you technically get away with not paying for your petrol because Asda are the one’s refusing your method of payment, effectively discriminating against a Monzo user.
The signs you see up at stations stating having a valid method of payment, etc are fair and just, but equally shouldnt Asda be stating that if you have a Monzo card, dont even think about touching that trigger?
If you were reported to the Police for theft for instance I wonder how it would be dealt with?
You would have to sort another method of payment before you leave. I had a security block put on a credit card once and I had to phone someone and get them to pay over the phone.
Also at pay@pump you have to authorise payment before it releases the fuel.
Is Monzo putting any information out about this at all? I know they don’t want to put it on the status page as they don’t believe it belongs there but if that’s where customers go to see if there are any known issues, I believe there should be something on there. If not, what about on social media? I imagine there must be a number of Monzo customers around the country who have had issues at Asda and are completely in the dark.
I have just had the same issue about 15 minutes ago said sale cancelled. Tried a few pumps with the same issue and then with another card and that worked fine seems to only be my Monzo card
