I believe Uber has changed this policy due to failed transactions and card fraud. In the past, UberPool was the one which debited cards immediately when requesting a ride whereas UberX rides only triggered active card check! Now imagine someone taking intercity rides with a zero balance card resulting in failed payments (even worse when using multiple fake accounts). This obviously creates annoyance and inconvenience for genuine customers
See I’ve never once missed any Uber payments so they must be rolling this out regardless of your history.
Edit: actually I think I mostly use UberPool so maybe this is why.

You will have been charged exactly the same just you wouldn’t have known with Lloyd’s without instant notifications.
Anyway you haven’t been charged, it’s pre-authorisation so will settle in a few days.
