Do any of you more tech connected folk on here have any advice for a good case for my new phone? Well, my soon to be new phone. Thanks, R-
Had the XR for a few days now, it’s quite a hefty device. I’m going caseless with it but I’d recommend getting something quite thin so it doesn’t feel like you’re carrying a brick around!
I really like the official Apple silicone and leather cases.
I probably prefer the silicone to be honest - But both are nice (if you can stomach the price).
Edit - Just realised there is no “official” case from Apple for the XR - Should have probably known that!
Edit 2 - I’d go for something like this for now @RogerB - https://www.amazon.co.uk/SURPHY-Silicone-Microfiber-Anti-Scratch-Shockproof/dp/B07G51Q688?th=1
Thanks Simon. I am relatively, and disproportionately, clumsy with expensive kit, so even a thin case would be good. R-
Had my first look at a real XR today and it’s big! Probably too big for me
I think my iPhone 6 is due an upgrade but I can’t/won’t pay for an XS. Having also used 3D Touch on a display model properly for the first time today, I’m now thinking I may just have to save my pennies and go for an 8. (Or a new battery for the 6 but let’s keep quiet about that option…)
I don’t know if it will happen this side of the pond but the US Apple stores are starting to offer refurbished 8’s - also might be worth waiting to see what Black Friday throws up. R-
Yeah, I got there eventually. Thanks for the update. R-
Looks like some more 3D touch features are coming to the Haptic Feedback system
I am waiting a while. I have a SE at the min. I was on Android for a while but after my last phone started to show signs of sleeping with the fish I decided to retire it before it completely packed up and jump back over to the fruitetarian side of things and went for the SE. Hehe. I saw a XR the other day and now I am debating between the blue and the white (also starting to take a shine to the red too). I like neutral colours but seeing as my favourite colour is purple (any shade of it, LOL!!!), I thought the blue might go nice with a lilac case and the lilac flower background. We will seeeee!!!
Bought an XS to have a look but it does feel too big and Face ID is a huge downgrade from Touch ID.
No way - it feels every bit as fast, I’ve never had Face ID fail, it works when you have gloves on, and best of all they get rid of that huge bloody chin on the bottom of the phone.
XS or XS Max? I have the Max, but think the XS is probably the perfect size for a lot of people.
As for FaceID - It’s better 70% of the time, but when it’s not as good in that 30%… It feels very sub standard.
Hmmm. You may be talking about the XS Max? I remember picking that up and seriously, literally thought I was picking up a thinned down 7 inch tablet for a second. I really did. LOL!!! @nickh What is the Max like for you?
At home, it’s great (documented WiFi/Network issues aside).
I almost don’t even both with my iPad anymore - It’s just about big enough to browse the web etc (without feeling like you are on a phone).
Out and about… There’s no denying it’s a big heavy phone.
So for me, I can see it being a nuisance in the summer wearing sports shorts (with loose pockets), and having the behemoth of a phone flailing around
So if you are constantly out and about, I might advise for the XS - If you are at home/work at a desk for a lot of the day… The Max is beautiful!
The issue is that Face ID requires you to be looking at the phone straight for a second for it to unlock. I’m used to reaching into my pocket and putting my thumb on the fingerprint reader so that the device unlocks before I even pull it out of my pocket and goes straight to the home screen without having to swipe up.
Apple Pay is another issue, especially on the tube where speed is the essence. With Touch ID you just have to keep your finger on the home button and you are guaranteed it will authorise a transaction. With Face ID you have to first “prime” it by looking at it and then hope you don’t accidentally dismiss the Apple Pay view before you had a chance to tap the card reader (and dismissing it is easy considering there is no safe area to put your fingers on without interacting with the UI).
Maybe I’m not the target market for this thing, but despite trying to use it as my daily driver for two weeks now I can’t stop thinking of my iPhone 8 so I might just switch back and keep the XS as a secondary phone. I need a device that works for me, not one that makes me work harder to accommodate its new and “improved” features.
Nope, talking about the XS “normal”, not the Max. Honestly even the iPhone 8 is already on the big side… I miss the iPhone 5/5S/SE form factor, that was the perfect size.
Hmmm. See, my fancy is leaning more towards the XR. (see my above post). It seems more the intermediate size wise anyway and I did pick up all of them in the shop. LOL!!! Me in the likes of Carphone Warehouse now is like the equivalent of 7 year old me in a sweet shop. HAHA!!! The specs of the XR seem impressive enough though. For me, it’s screen quality and a phone that feels comfortable to hold. If I do get it, as this will probably be my first iphone post home-key era, (my iPhone CV is matchstick thin considering how many Apple pips (iphones) the company have launched at people, haha!!!) I’d consider it my “non-home-key” training device. LOL!!!
If I was buying my own phone now - I’d go for the XR all day long.
Ignore the “screen quality” debate - I bet you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference (unless you had them both side by side, inspecting every minuscule detail).
watches XR slowly creeping further to the top of the possible list LOL!!!
For me, I think its to do with the pixelation and how well I can deal with it. I have bad eyes and even with my glasses it helps if the screen is not too pixelated but then I think thats a personal preference thing. (I sometimes do put them side by side and differentiate. Haha!!! I suppose that’s a force of habit that comes with making your own things. Attention to detail and quality assurance. LOL!!!)
I take it you had the Max already before the XR came out?
If you can see the difference between the XR and XS I’ll be well impressed! I’ve looked at them side by side and it’a virtually impossible to tell - I really don’t think you’d be able to see a difference with day to day usage.
I had the X before, and work sent me an XS Max - Otherwise I would have stayed with the X.
If it was my money though, I would have gone for the XR on the basis of performance/spec vs price.
