I honestly think that a feature that would allow you to hide or ‘delete’ transactions with a simple swipe to the right would be a great addition to Mondo, and possibly in the future the option to download and print statements of all transactions for a set period of time.
Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas!
We’ll totally give you tools to generate “old statements”, we know it’s fairly common to be asked for a traditional piece of paper when dealing with bureaucracy. Our first step on that direction will be the ability to export.
Regarding hiding or deleting transactions that’s something to explore but, on a first thought, it sounds a bit scary. There are some important consequences if we let you hide transactions at your will. Suddenly totals wouldn’t add up, our budgeting tools would be more complex (should we consider hidden transactions as part of your expenditure or not?), how do you bring them back if you want to unhide them?, etc. It seems a bit too messy IMHO.
What we are totally working on is in letting you dismiss non transactional items, for example if we send you an item saying “Your funds are running low”, you’ll be able to delete it after reading it. I hope that makes sense
You’re right declines are a different story, we will probably let you remove them since they don’t affect your balance. This was in fact the original design for that:
Best part is that we’re actually building it right now so we’ll have news
I think the best model to visualising how hidden transactions would work is actually to think of it as 2 views, “Important Transactions” vs “All transactions”. Like “Pinned” vs “All” in inbox by Gmail.
If you’re worried about hidden transactions being missed, or people assuming incorrect maths, you could summarise groups of hidden transactions, “8 Hidden Transactions: -£58.37”.
Perhaps the word “Hidden” is the sticking point. How about Junk, Unimportant, Boring, ect.
There’s a problem with comparing it to Important vs All like in email though, which is that with email the items you are viewing are not actions undertaken by you, the user, they are created by someone else. Take this example:
Email
"Acme Corp has a special one-time offer of 35% off it’s latest product The Toastmaster 3000
"
Transaction
"️ £2.99 at Costa"
So I think it’d be fair to say these are two examples one might use for ‘unimportant’ items. The email is some marketing fluff, just a generic newsletter blast. The transaction is your morning coffee, it’s not an unusual purchase and only a small amount.
The reason the email is okay to be flagged as unimportant is that it doesn’t impose or force anything. You receiving it doesn’t mean you’ve then purchased The Toastmaster at 35% off, it’s just a suggestion, an idea that Acme wanted to put in your head.
However, with the morning coffee you purchased, it’s not something that’s up in the air — it 100% happened, and even if just a small amount, it’s still part of your spending behaviour, which means it holds as much importance on Mondo as any other transaction. Especially considering, if this were to be your daily coffee, at the end of the month it comes to ~£90. That’s too much to
as unimportant.
After that, the issue that comes with hidden transactions, even if the amount being redacted is provided, is that we move away from being a simple, clear view of your spending, to being a curated view of your spending where your bank account has an opinion (and therefore agenda) over where your money goes. I believe there’s a huge benefit in staying neutral, especially as the product grows and reaches more types of user with varying natures of spending
It’s a big topic with lots of tradeoffs and implications to consider, and always interesting to have the conversation!
Thanks @anon173672 You have very good points, and I agree that the current implementation is very clear, because all the things in the list are things I’ve deliberately bought and it’s great to see them.
(With the exception of Active Card Checks, and Playstation taking 10p and refunding 10p immediately rather than doing an active card check. Which is what gave me the idea in the first place)
The situation I’m thinking of is when you become a full bank, and I run my entire list of approx. 50 direct debits and standing orders through the app. It would become incomprehensible very quickly. Perhaps that’s a problem to be solved with Reoccuring Payments. But in the absence of that functionality I want to just quickly check, was this charge the same or close to the charge last month, and then just hide it or group it all together as just boring stuff.
So perhaps hiding is better served by Grouping?
- New payment comes in
- tap to send to “Bills” group
- the first line of todays transactions is “3 Transactions in Bills, - £30”
You can remove the banking agenda worry by making the grouping all user driven.
Thanks again, great work taking all this into consideration.
It’s christmas time and my girlfriend and I share a joint account.
When I buy her a present she will see how much it was for and where I purchased it.
The only way to get around this is to transfer money into my personal account but then she would be suspicious and probably ask questions, .
The only way I could think of would be if you had the option to hide the next transaction you make for a set period of days, ie. 15 days.
But then your total balance would be out and that might seem weird…
Hi Ben & welcome
I’d transfer to your Personal account and put a note in along the lines of “Transfer to personal account to cover annual charges.” or “Transfer to personal account for something” or if you’re adventurous, “Transfer to personal account for funds to pay for an amazing gift for the love of my life; [insert name]”
Then if the questions start, hold your ground and don’t crumble… there’s only 22 days left to hold out!
Sorry to bump an old thread. But this would actually be an incredibly useful feature in cases of DV where you are preparing to leave and trying to put funds aside. Financial abuse is fairly common in abusive relationships and being able to hide those transactions and move small increments to savings account would make a massive difference to victims.
Would be amazing to see a challenger bank be able to provide such a lifesaving service perhaps in conjunction with DV charities an account could request to be switched to one that has the facility but didn’t look any different rather than rolling out across an entire network. Who knows. Probably just pie in the sky thinking!
+1 for this. Ability to hide certain transactions would be great. Even if there was I category value that you’re able to use like #hidden and it would hide them from the Home screen
Hi, something to consider is sometimes people need to hide there transactions for privacy reasons, for example from a controlling partner who checks there bank account frequently.
Hi. Really sorry to hear if that’s a problem for you. If you reach out to support they have ways to help you.
Unfortunately there isn’t and can’t/won’t be ways of completely hiding things from view.
Also just to add if someone did have a really controlling partner, I’m sure they’d end up finding out that transactions can be hidden, find the way of reversing that and then I shudder to think of the reaction in person.
This would be really useful. I wouldn’t need to affect balance or anything, it just needs to hide the name of the transaction, or remove the line entirely whilst not affecting the numbers.
I’ve just bought flowers for example, and an incredibly unsubtle line now appears on my transaction list. Right at the top. So I can’t open Monzo around my wife now until they’re delivered.
Seems like a simple enough request.
An alternative could be to add custom names to the transactions?
How large is your phone screen? surely it can’t be read unless she stands right over your shoulder everytime open your phone?
Even then… it just so happens that you open the Monzo app, wait for ages looking at your feed until her eyes adjust to read the the line of text that says you bought flowers?
My partner never looks at my phone and couldn’t care less what I’m doing on it. I’m the same with her too so I’m just curious why that’s all I can’t even see it accidentally happening with reflections on the screen and everything else.
I guess you could make sure you only check Monzo when you’re sat at least 2 meters apart? At least until you do some more transactions to bump it down the list.
Just do a few pot transfers, just not to/from one called “Presents for the wife”
Or atleast the chance to nickname transactions if it’s not possible to hide. Adult content comes to mind, being able to hide such transactions would be useful or nickname them.
Use a virtual card (you’ll need Plus/Premium) and make it come from your RSPCA pot and then it won’t show in your main feed at all.
Presumably it shows on the pot statement?
Then people don’t need anyone to know what a caring animal lover they are if required to provide a bank statement
Looool! Yeah virtual option would be nice without having to go plus or premium. I don’t need my statements listing for example “only fans” payment.
