Do many people still use physical cards?

Apart from cash, I only use physical cards. It still seems much quicker and easier than a phone.

Can you do cash refunds and transactions with a debit card under Google Pay?

I sometimes use Metal cards (but mostly Apple Pay).

Not following why this is any more the case for Apple than Google?

2.4 avios per clubcard point tho!

Apple has been open about tokenising purchases, they don’t need that data for their business.

Google will use where you purchased and what for advertising.

Yea I’m sticking with mobile wallets - trust that more than using the physical card in different places :man_shrugging:t2:

It’s a lot more complex than that of course, but that’s the basic crux of each approach as I understand it.

I mainly just use cards. Not everywhere has apple pay either so I just stick to the card

In a normal month the only time I use my physical card is to take out cash for the barbers, which doesn’t accept card.

For everything else it’s Apple Pay. Can’t remember the last time I came across a card machine that didn’t accept Apple Pay. I can’t actually remember the last time I used my physical card for a transaction aside from cash withdrawals. Must be at least a couple of months.

I like being able to go out with only my phone and keys and nothing else in my pockets.

Cards all the time unless it’s the very rare occasion that I’ve gone to the supermarket and left the wallet at home or in the car.

Very much so – not all retailers / terminals are set up for phone / Apple Pay - local Post Office being a case in point, just as well had physical wallet with physical card(s). So there is always that lottery when you head out armed only with a phone that it won’t be enough to pay for your coffee / lunch - I’ve even been known to check on entering somewhere that it takes contactless before ordering

Exactly this.

I always have the phone with me but never pay with it unless it’s the only option.

If they don’t take contactless then it’s laziness on their part and I’d take my business elsewhere. There is no excuse to not have a contactless compatible card reader in 2019.

I should have said that the amount was over Ā£30 - although some will still process that with Apple Pay and additional authentication. I think you’re being a bit draconian - most say lunch stops around here have contactless, but quite possibly some don’t and there’s not as much choice as there is in more urban areas. Fine to waltz out and take your business elsewhere but if you’re starving and need lunch, it’s a bit OTT …

Yes there is.

Not a good one though, the technology has been around for a very long time now in the UK and it just makes you look out of touch and like you don’t care about the customers convenience at all if you don’t have one.

Mastercard own Vocalink, who operate the LINK ATM network, Faster Payments, BACS and the Cheque and Credit Clearing System.

So if you want to avoid Mastercard and Visa, you’ll need to send your money about exclusively through CHAPS and withdraw it at a bank counter.

There’s a baguette shop in Barrow that doesn’t take card at all. I quite like it in there, and I use it despite needing to take cash out just for it. I make my consternation known why I’m paying.
