Bring back Metal Cards

Even if it’s at cost, they looked great and they really add to the experience of having the higher plans.

Not happening.

You’re not the real revels :eyes:

They’d have said “Never going to happen”

On a more helpful point. While I agree the metal card was possibly the nicest card Monzo ever did, it was expensive to make and not all that practical in reality.

This is a dangerous idea to commit a never to. Because I’d have been along with one of my 1p bets. I think they’ll return in some form some day. They’re on the US roadmap as a buy once proposition, and @rossmonzo seemed to suggest that the door for metal cards remains ajar at the very least.

So I’d never say never to this one.

There is a demand for them (as Revolut demonstrates). And they make more sense than plastic with respect to the environment if you execute them right. The problems that made them marmite for some folks are pretty simple to solve (in theory). I suspect the stopgap for premium customers sidegrading to one of the new plans dissuades dissenting voices, but once those cards start expiring, I think we’ll see more and more posts like this if they’re not back by then.

I feel like metal cards are kinda overrated. Like, so what, it’s just a piece of metal. They also have an increased cost to the consumer compared to just a regular plastic card.

They also have a habit of getting stuck in ATM’s, and 95%+ of people probably use Apple / Google Pay, and so therefore it just seems like more work for Monzo to design and produce another metal card compared to just keep their current 3 designs of card.

Monzo’s current selection of cards has way better brand consistency, compared to before where there was Hot Coral, Holographic Blue, and White Metal. They need consistency across all the cards if they want people to recognise the card as a Monzo :monzooo: card.

(Just my opinions, feel free to counter-argue them)

That’s only because the bank passes it on. Even if they don’t, there’s no increased cost unless you pull out of a contract early.

They don’t.

You’d be the first in line if Monzo offered one

Have you ever had a metal debit card?

I’ve had a lot of metal cards (spending too much on them sometimes) and never seen them get stuck. Doesn’t mean they don’t just never happened to me before. Only thing I recall was making sure to tap the back of the card and not the front lol

Honestly, I think we’re at a point in time now where physical debit cards could and should be optional extras anyway, you might not realise it or intended to, but that’s also the case you’re making too in dismissing the idea of metal cards.

I think in that context metal cards actually make a lot more sense, even in terms of cost, than plastic does.

In the world of smartphones, when do we actually need a physical debit card? There are two primary scenarios that come to mind for me. ATMs and situations where contactless is not an option. If we consider the card a backup and supplementary to mobile wallets, we can ditch contactless functionality in them. This has a security boon and means we no longer need the sandwhiched solution for contactless functionality. That takes care of the thickness problem (though other vendors produce thinner sandwiched metal cards than Monzo and don’t suffer the same ATM problems) that results in some comparability problems with foreign ATMs and it also makes them much more durable.

At the end of their life, unlike plastic cards, they can be recycled and re-used, making the physical card a circular product. That’s much better for the environment. Due to their durability and with innovations like numberless cards, they can theoretically last a really long time (decades as opposed to a few years) too.

Well I hadn’t intended to, but this a really good point. Cards aren’t necessarily needed anymore I guess.

Lost card fees.

Plastic Monzo cards are £5 for UK delivery unless you have higher limits

Monzo Premium card was £50 if you lost it. That’s a 10x difference.

ATM’s could be solved by effectively doing what NatWest do with their Emergency Cash feature, but allow that option on every ATM, for every bank, for all accounts. Or allowing verified Apple Pay/GWallet contactless transactions to happen.

Probably be on an 18+ plan :joy:

I’ve seen my Brother’s Revolut Metal Black, and whilst it’s kinda cool, I just don’t see the day to day benefit. Even he leaves it in a drawer and just uses GPay for all his purchases.

Because there isn’t one beyond “that’s cool”.

I mean… most folk don’t regularly lose their cards, it’s a less likely cost to have to consider.

I had my metal card replaced twice at no cost.

I like metal cards, I think Monzo’s was ugly. I prefer them if they had longer expiry dates as they should last much longer. I don’t care about increased costs because I’m not regularly losing my card.

I genuinely think you’d be all over them if Monzo brought them back out.

There are more reasons that the cool factor, though that is a major factor to many.

I’ve never really understood why people who don’t want one are so against it, rather than just…. not getting one.

Exactly. So why do people want one??

I don’t think I’m the right consumer for a metal card tbh.

I said so in my post:

Why does it matter? Nobody needs to explain their like of a particular product to justify it.

If they ever do bring back metal cards I would like it where you can just buy one for £50 or whatever and it’s not tied to a plan.
