If it came out in that gross salmon colour that cards seem to be currently, then I’d agree. Otherwise you’re wrong
Can we have silver monzo wording along with silver MC logo?
I’d have that in plastic for sure.
Realistically there, many metal cards are not getting recycled. People are destroying them and binning them.
Also cards have to expire, and metal cards have their own scratching/discolouration/etc issues
Some NatWest atms have the contactless reader. Whether it works is a different story.
That bottom one
@AlanDoe I’ll have one of the second ones please.
If it can be my award for whatever I won this year I’ll be happy.
Slightly off-topic but @AlanDoe - the black card concept images I uploaded above were all .png’s, but the upload process did the first one as a .png and all subsequent uploads were converted into .jpeg files. I’ve always uploaded .png’s in the past and they have displayed OK in both light & dark modes. The conversion to .jpeg’s introduces white in the transparent sections - resulting in white corners when in dark mode which looks a bit crap.
Has a discourse setting changed?
I think if the industry/MasterCard could get beyond the whole ‘cards need to expire’ thing, then there’s a place for metal cards.
If they could offer a ‘lifetime card’ with the following features I’d purchase it.
- No printed numbers or expiry date
- The card never expires
- Card details live in the app
- No NFC so no need for a bonded card
The overall proposition being that with mobile payments being the norm, the card will only be used in ATMs, at fuel pumps and in emergencies. It won’t be used much, so it can be built in a way that it can outlast the person using it.
If customers still want a normal card, they can still opt for that.
There are probably a bunch of holes in this, but this feels like a good idea after a couple of glasses of
Same with ATMs. They have contactless pads now
Sure, but both of these examples are exceptions rather than the norms. It’s going to be a very long time until ATMs are even at the point where even 50% of them support contactless. I’m pretty sure a load of them are still out there running on Windows XP too.
Then for the fuel pumps, my local Sainsbury’s earlier this year just upgraded and now has pay at pump. Except the pumps don’t have contactless, so I usually have to go into the shop to pay contactless. These are new pumps that likely won’t be upgraded for years.
Anyway the point being for the vast majority of transactions people don’t need physical cards, but the two use-cases here are going to stubbornly stick around for decades.
That’s assuming ATMs don’t disappear entirely before they get upgraded.
The 3 near me are almost always out of service, and I suspect the cost of maintenance compared to their usage is becoming less justifiable.
That would be against the law so that isn’t happening.
Well, I kinda felt bad for the OP and chucked a vote in, I don’t even bank with Monzo no more but every little counts.
Coincidentally I noticed Monzo are advertising for folk in the Plus team. Maybe one of @davidwalton ‘s new year resolutions would be to go and work as a card designer.
The role is here

I was one of the people who jumped on the bandwagon of the metal card. Looking back it’s a gimmick, in other markets fair enough but I can honestly swim in the 3 years I was a plus customer before moving to mac last month I had many only handed the card to anyone less than 10 times. I use monzo as my main account but Apple Pay is easier. Looking at the Revolut premium account I wish monzo would go down a similar line, remove the gimmicks and give us a truly market leading bundled account
For the last five years I have had a white metal MasterCard Debit card from Monzo. This card is extremely durable and solid and I’ve had it for its whole valid until date. I used to pay £15 a month for this account however now I pay £17 a month and I have this cheap horrible plastic card that you advertise as a premium card. I really feel like as we’re paying additional £2 a month you should at least give us the metal card again. Please bring it back. Do we really need more plastic cards in society.
I would purchase a Monzo metal card via subscription or a one off purchase if it was available, another vote to bring it back!
