BPay type payment band

I’ve just signed up for the card, I’ll get one of their bands/fobs/wraps at some point.

Edit: They sent me 1p to test my bank account. Free penny!

Really want something like this, and tired of waiting for Monzo as they don’t seem to plan to go down this route at all. So I’ve tried to sign up to Pingit but can’t get it to work. Are there any alternatives that people know of? I think I’m out of luck without spending a small fortune.

Pingit is easy to activate and work, stick with it, call the helpline if stuck. My partner uses it

I’m tired of this too . It’s been ages since we made the request . No answer from monzo . Just move to ping it and it’s pony . Can’t even autoupdate payments at the moment have to keep crediting band . This is a workaround . I want to move completely to monzo and this is holding me back as I still need Barclays .

I think this thread doesn’t have the votes . Please vote on this idea even you just glance at this thread

Thanks @anon84116219 - I apologise that we haven’t replied.

This isn’t something we’ve scoped out as we just haven’t seen significant demand for it, either internally or externally.

What numbers would you need to see for it to be considered . I’m sure it would be a success even if you a crude pilot using a joint account card in a band .

I realistically think it would need to be in our Top 20 of user votes on here to make it even worth bringing up. And that would have to happen organically, to the point where user research outside of the forum also showed similar demand.

Some of the questions we ask ourselves at the moment when scoping out new things are as follows:

  1. Is this something a lot of customers really want? Does the data prove that from multiple sources?
  2. Do we have the engineering, design and product resources to build this without affecting anything else we’re currently building or hoping to build?
  3. Is this something that would make a noticeable difference to customers going Full Monzo and contribute to enough revenue to justify us making it?

Right now my gut tells me that the answer to all of those questions is no. And there are other feature requests that have had a significant amount more votes than this where we aren’t scoping them out because the answer is no for them as well.

Sorry to be a downer, but that’s my take on it.

The only way I could currently see this happening is if we felt there was enough demand for this to include it in a Monzo Plus bundle and it required almost no engineering work or other work to make. And I think that’s unlikely, at least right now. I believe there are also other significant regulations around things that you wear on your body, because you then have to scope out health issues around materials and allergies etc.

But what if I asked really nicely?

They’ll tell you no really nicely :joy: or with emoji’s :x::no_entry:

For 1 and 3 i suppose it would depend on monzos goals.

These kind of payment methods have a small set of users and use cases but those use cases are quite good. From making payment more accessible to people underlying versions activities, to being able to provide a tracked spending/payment option for kids for example that parents can use.

These kind of things like payment bands, paym, etc that pingit support seems to be more around giving people more options and making banking more accessible than those options always making profit. After all a non profit making option can keep a customer in profit making features elsewhere.

Those are fair and valid points. I’d be interested to see if there’s any research and data about accessibility. Children’s accounts aren’t something we’re actively exploring at the moment, but if that changes I can certainly see there being an argument there as well. Thanks! :grinning:

Ah so this is an interesting difference. It doesn’t need to be a children’s account.

So for example I can link pingit to my main account. I can make a pot in pingit with some money in it and link that to a wrist band. I could give that to my child (if I had one yet) and they could use that for spending their pocket money. No need for a full account but still gives some flexibility for a family.

It also has some decent use for outdoor activities where you don’t want you expensive phone with you but don’t want to go back to get your wallet or phone to go pay for something.

Small use cases, it would be good to see some research on it. Maybe Barclays has some?

My use case is simple . I’m a London commuter working in city . I pay for everything via card . I’ve been using bPay for years . I use it for Bus tube, train lunch and coffee on a average day . Maybe a few drinks after work . The use of band make it ease it for me to get around . Another use case would for the elderly or disabled . I recently got my mum into monzo and having a payment band for her would be great as she would have to carry less as well. You might think taking a card out your wallet or purse is trival but it’s time consuming for some people.

I work in banking as well and funny enough as a product owner and have noticed ( Points 1 & 2 ) retail banks tend to do is pack mentality. They offer what every other bank has to offers, with a slightly different flavour. Being a disruptor is what monzo is doing and should continue to do . It should be looking at user case like the person who mentioned about pocket money on a band with a limit, making payment methods more accessible to the disabled and elderly . I don’t know if you will find data to support this . But if it’s marketed right it will open the bank to more users. No one knew they needed a smart phone till apple made one and showed the world why the need it . Nokia probably saw the data and said it didn’t support the need also .

Anyway I hope you will take a longer a look at the band option . I can’t see why engineering wise it’s much more different than your join account System. If you don’t want to take liability of band manufacture. Offer it to a third party and offer the the chip only .

I eventually did get it working, thanks.
I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now, just for small bits of extra spending at first, and it’s so amazingly convenient. Next payday, all of my spending money is being loaded onto it.

It also meant that I could move all of my bill money (SOs/DDs) into my main account - just before they announced the new Bills pot, typically, though I don’t think that covers SOs yet anyway. So now, my bills money is in the right place to be taken without me having to remember to transfer it when bills are due out, and my spending money is kept separate so that I don’t even need to use my card. Very happy with it.

Would this work with new SCA regulations? There’s no way to pin authorise is there?

This was the main reason for me.

As someone with some motor difficulties, and executive functioning problems (namely, an incredible ability to lose things in plain sight, like my purse in my bag), using a card has always felt inconvenient. It’s minor, really, but enough to cause me stress when out and about.

Having Google Pay on my old phone helped, as my phone was usually slightly easier to get hold of, but it wasn’t ideal and what I bought a new phone I realised that Google Pay hadn’t been ‘life changing’ enough for it to be an essential feature of my new phone. So, I bought one without it.

Pingit has actually made a considerable difference to my life. It’s made my shopping trips so much easier, and so much less stressful. I don’t do a lot of shopping in person, admittedly, but it’s certainly easier now.

It’s one of those things that I was living without. I wanted it, but I was happy waiting until I realised that I would possibly be waiting forever, and now I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer.

That’s a good point actually

You’d have to authorise in app after so many purchases or an amount reached.

Is this what they’ve said? Monzo says that can’t be done with their cards as it doesn’t comply with legislation
