They do some great deals when they are installing fibre to a location, got a mate who’s on 1Gb for £20pm. It’s insanely fast!
Sky announced a few months ago they were going to support Openreach FTTP but still not seen any pricing from them. I don’t think any of the budget ISPs are going to adopt FTTP until the wholesale price comes down substantially
In my area BT Openreach FTTP are the only provider who can give you more than 2mbps. Even their non fibre package can’t give you more than 2. I bet they probably have 90% of my estate using them
The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on particular ISPs (internet service providers) around the globe, and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network.
What’s the issue with the Superhub? Of course it’s consumer-grade garbage but other than that it’s okay if all you need is IPv4 connectivity and Ethernet.
I had an unreliable Superhub a few years back. Generally had to reset it every couple of months whenever the WiFi (not the Ethernet) stopped working. I just forced them to upgrade at the end of the contract or I said I was going to walk away to Sky. They quickly replaced and upgraded it and not had any issues with the current one.
Unreliable, poor WiFi range, needed rebooted almost weekly. Placed into modem mode and coupled with a Amplifi HD and 2 mesh points for the routing part (and improved WiFi).
But really ‘best’ depends a lot on what your criteria is. Personally for me cost isn’t an issue (I need to be able to work from home, so downtime could be costly) so I’ve been with AAISP for years. OTOH I’ve frequently recommended Zen or even Sky to friends who have differing needs to me.
Virgin Media. Broadband router is beyond awful. However i decided to make the costly upgrade of getting a £300 extended router and i havent looked back. Strong signals from long range with 350MBPS+ very happy with that.
Where I live is a bit isolated, and a fair distance from the exchange so when I was searching for broadband I was receiving figures of around 6MB/s over standard broadband or between 14-21 for fibre.
Virgin don’t operate in my area, so that was a no go. And satellite (4G) broadband, while quicker, is not an option.
In the end spoke to Plusnet who said they recently improved their infrastructure, went with them and now average around 38MB/s over wifi, bit more over ethernet.
I know it’s not the fastest, but that feeling where you were just going to accept the reality of having slow internet and then a shining knight comes along and gives you more than enough for 4k HDR etc
Can definitely vouch for those who say that TalkTalk are the worst: rubbish download/upload speed (1.8Mbps download and about 0.8Mbps upload) - it sucks living in a rural location where there isn’t any fibre AND horrific customer service.
In the office we’re supplied by a small ISP called ITS Group, currently averaging 80Mbps download and 50Mbps upload - they said this isn’t good enough (even though we’re happy with it) and have promised to get each machine to 100Mbps download (currently using wireless connection and due to the high volume of APs in the vicinity, it’s interfering with the connection…they have promised to supply a wired connection to each computer FOC). Can’t complain.
Residential wise, I used Virgin and was always getting great speeds there, only had to complain once, they sent me a replacement box and went back up to expected speeds.
Used to have Virgin before. Their speeds were pretty good, but it is horrible for online gaming. The latency/ping would jump every couple of minutes whenever I was playing something online, so now I’ve switched to Sky
I miss my Virgin 380MB/s broadband. Had them for 10 years (not at that speed obviously) and only had a few times the system went down. The newer routers are more stable that the older ones. I can’t get Virgin in my new house so I went with Sky. Its okay, but nowhere near the speeds of Virgin.
Be prepared to be messed around with the installation.
In my previous place, they never showed up on the day and I had to ring them at 5pm to find out what was happening. They said they’d called me (they hadn’t) and that they needed to do some work but couldn’t tell me when. They told me they’d let me know when planning permission was granted (i’m pretty sure they use this is a BS excuse, just an observation on how they act). 6 weeks later, still nothing and when I called them, they apparently hadn’t submitted anything for planning permission. The day after, we get a call to arrange installation due in 3 weeks time.
Tried to move my services to where I now live and set up the installation a for few days after moving (this was in March this year). Took a day off for it, first attempt was a guy showed up, complained for 10 minutes about how he hasn’t been able to complete any jobs all day and whinging about his management. Said he needed to check a few things and he’d let me know what’s going on - instead he just left.
Second attempt three weeks after the first, my wife took to the day off this time. They showed up, had a look at where it was be installed and said they couldn’t do it (you’d have thought they’d had resolved the original issues within those 3 weeks? Nope. They’d be back again in another 3 weeks.
I took another day off work. No-one showed up. No contact, nothing. 5pm rolls around, I call to find out where they are, “no-ones coming, more work needs to be done”. After a lot of effort, I managed to get the order cancelled. I have never encountered such disregard for a customers time coupled with blatant unprofessionalism and incompetence.
All that being said, if an installation does go well, the general service is outstanding. The router is shocking however, intermittently stops working every few days and can be patchy with latency when gaming. When I did have it, I got a much better router and put theirs in modem mode, fixed all the issues.
Signed up for MSE’s deal (Vivd 100 fibre, Player TV, £175 credit for £30 a month). Get order confirmation. Modem on way. Sent contract for £59 a month
When I called they said the deal I was offered “wasn’t a deal” and I’d have to cancel, insisted they couldn’t check the emails they sent me confirming it was in fact a deal, wouldn’t escalate my call to resolve it, then insisted I needed to cancel my order and reorder the plan myself after they stuffed up. Then they sent me two modem/Tivo boxes The second one I left at the Click and Collect for them to sort out. Overall shocking customer service.
Now on my next level of pain they can’t activate the connection and need to mess around at home tonight to see if they can get it working. Maybe i’ll have internet tonight, maybe I won’t. The adventure continues.
Was previously with NowTV. Speed wasn’t great but at least I never a problem that meant I had to speak to them.
