Banking on iOS 16

They always get it released before the event, almost always around now (late August or early September). On average, about a week before the event.

They got caught out once, I think, and that was only because Apple gave 48 hours between the Release Candidate and the release itself. That taught developers the lesson never to wait for the RC to get ready for an update! I think it even caused issues with App Store Connect crashing so developers couldn’t upload new builds at all for a time.

But yes, I personally have no inside knowledge.

Interesting, I was referring only to HSBC specifically there. I do remember a year where Nationwide was unusable and it seemed to be deliberate. It hasn’t happened since though. It may actually have been the iOS 13 beta where I believe Apple made some underlying security changes to a feature which many banks relied upon for “anti-jailbreak” checking?

Regarding First Direct, I’m not so sure on the history because I’ve only had an account with them for just over a year so I’ve only got first hand experience of two beta periods. Both were blocked, again, but unlike HSBC last year they took until the last minute to fix it.

HSBC strangely pulled a bit of a bait and switch last year, where they deployed the fix update early in July, then quickly pushed another update to break the app again. The final fix update didn’t seem to appear until September.

Not exactly what I’d want to hear if I had millions in a bank like I’m sure many Coutts customers do…

They don’t touch the help.

A totally useless and almost unbelievable message!

It’s not like they didn’t have months to get ready. Every other bank (even HSBC) managed it.

My thoughts exactly!

I wouldn’t be best-pleased if I’d used some of my many millions to purchase a new iPhone 14 model, which comes running iOS 16 of course, and then couldn’t install my banking app on it. I’d also know who to blame (and not Apple, of course) and would immediately consider switching to C Hoare and Co!

They released an app update today, just in the nick of time maybe.

Or three months late, whichever way you choose to look at it!
