I’m really pleased the decision has been made not to print these on the cards. When you lose a card, you get a new card number. You don’t get a new bank account and sort code though - and that information is available to whoever has your card.
Exactly, in case anyone’s wondering what the risk is, as an example, once someone knows your account number & sort code, then they can set up a Direct Debit from your account & in some circumstances, they don’t need your authorisation to do so -
I’ve been managing with them not being on the card by just copy & pasting from the app.
Selecting the Account Number or Sort Code allows copy (on iOS).
Thanks. It is going to be a deal breaker for me. Especially with the current location of the account details in the app. I’ve got it written down now as I’m trying to set things up and that is less secure.
But there you go. Other banks provide this feature for convenience so I’ll just go there. Thanks for the prompt reply.
We all provide our account number and sort code to various organisations, numerous times, during the life of an account. Personally, I think the security issue is a misnomer. This data is held in various places where it could leak from. I’ve had my account details on my Lloyds bank account for years, and it has never caused me an issue. For convenience sake, would love to see it on the card, but that’s not my call!
As long as Monzo sign up to the Paym scheme, I could exist without the details on the card. That’s where I use the account number/sort code most, for friends to transfer money, and Paym gets around this beautifully.
But I agree, security in this case is a misnomer. Can’t see it being any less secure than having the actual 16 digit card number and CVV printed on the card.
I fully accept that this isn’t going to change. It won’t make me leave Monzo and it’s an occasional annoyance.
But just taking a quick straw poll of people around the office, while they have cards with only some of the details on they say it’s really annoying. They stay with the banks, but it’s annoying. Those who do have it on say they don’t think much of it, but acknowledge that if it weren’t there it would be annoying.
Monzo is… or will, become more than just a group of people who are active on this forum, and while I don’t think it’s going to be a game changer for anyone, I don’t buy the security side of it one bit, with the additional security around Monzo as well as the fact that I lasted 10 years without it ever being an issue on my legacy bank card.
I too don’t get the security concerns, any unauthorised DD can be quickly reversed.
We give them out to countless organisations.
But… It’s on your phone. Which most of us have with us at all times. Especially at times when we have our wallets/would need a sort code.
This is a really strange “deal breaker”. I’m just not seeing your logic here
I can’t comment on the deal breaker for him, it’s not for me.
My issue is that it’s in the app. I have had situations where I need to get the information but if I exit one app I can’t re-enter. Case in point is transfering from my legacy bank to Monzo - I opened my legacy bank’s app, put in all details then went to my Monzo app for the account number, copied and went back to the legacy bank app and… ah, it asked me to log in and I was back at the beginning.
It really isn’t a deal breaker for me, or I imagine for many, but the reasons given not to have it on don’t really seem to be extremely valid - even mild inconvenience needs some good reasoning.
I will agree to disagree with folk on here though - it’s never going to please all sides
As I said at the beginning. The big issue I am encountering is needing the details to update account when I’m on my phone. Going back into the Monzo app is annoying for this. I happen to have to use my account details quite a bit so this it something that is making me think twice about fully committing to Monzo as my main current account provider.
As Monzo is designed to be a mobile-only bank I had hoped that they would provide this, as with no other documentation coming with the account, the only place my details exist in an accessible form is on the app. If my battery dies or something I’m stuffed!
The “it’s on your phone” argument doesn’t hold up I’m afraid. If I lose access to my phone for any extended length of time (drop it down the loo, lost or stolen) there is absolutely no way of accessing my bank details. If I’m abroad, I can see that quickly becoming mission critical as I’m unable to ask for emergency funds to be paid in back in the UK for me to withdraw.
As with @coffeemadman the reasons for NOT having it haven’t, for me, been made out satisfactorily. And, as I said earlier, I don’t buy the security argument. I’ve had those details on every bank card I’ve carried for 30 years with no problem.
But, likewise, it’s not a deal-breaker for me.
Use the brain and remember the details
I’ve got the sort code/account number on my current card with my legacy bank and I don’t even need it because I’ve memorised alongisde the 16 digit card number and CSV. It does make it harder to resist the occasional splurge online without the card handy though.
Monzo might even be able to add the details into the autocomplete on Mobile devices for forms if allowed, so we wouldn’t need to go into the app to get the numbers.
I’m actually looking forward to not having the details on the card - whenever we get the accounts - so it looks nice and clean when I’m paying contactlessly.
There will be a web interface for Monzo soon enough to get the details if you lose your device.
Otherwise, are we really trying to counter for the situation of “what if I have my phone stolen, have no access to the Internet and I urgently need to set up a direct debit?”
I do understand the point being made, account number on the card has historically been useful, I’ve always liked it being there but it being on the card is a security risk, albeit a minor one that criminals don’t seem to bother exploiting.
The main driving factor for me is that account number are going to become pretty “legacy” over the next few years so I wouldn’t bother with putting them on the cards.
It amazes me how big an issue this is for people. 04-00-04 is so easy to remember. So why not try and memorise your account number - it is no longer than remembering a phone number and I can already memorise mine. How many people need to have their phone numbers written down, or printed on their phone to remember them?
Barclays show the details on the front… I wonder if they didn’t think of the security implications?
I’m genuinely curious what sort of situations an account number is regularly needed for? I haven’t used mine for months. Obviously when setting up a new direct debit I need them, but that’s not a regular occurrence.
Just print out a screenshot from the app, and you’ll have the ‘documentation’ you would normally have. Or as @nick69g says, write the account number on the back with a sharpie. There are a number of solutions to this that don’t require an embossing machine. It’s up to you, obviously, but I’m surprised that the most important factor when choosing a bank is whether an account number is pre-printed on a specific piece of plastic.
Exactly… lol… funny.
Yes. Forget how good the app functionality is and all the benefits of that… lol
With repeated and constant use, maybe you will remember what they are without the need to have them printed or written down. Just a thought…
