Working from Home

I think it would stop me slouching (obviously) and maybe keep me more focussed. Rather than I am now, with my feet up and watching YouTube.

I don’t have one at home, but I used to work in an office where sit/stand desks were standard issue, and I used it all the time. I found it particularly useful to overcome the post-lunch lethargy.

I went in with the same mindset as you, but ended up loving it so much that I’m going to get a Fully Jarvis Bamboo standing desk once I have an office that it’ll fit in…

Exactly how I made my desk. It looks amazing, so many people come round and ask where I got it. Well worth the afternoon it took.

That said - you know that wood prices are through the roof atm? Where are you getting the wood from?

I haven’t decided on what wood I want yet. That image I posted earlier is from a seller I found on etsy and it’s pine.

They want £280 to post me a live edge piece that is 180cm x 60cm.

I have a setup similar to the image @jaisullivan posted earlier except 3 monitors so I worry if it will be sturdy enough with all that weight from the monitor arm in the middle.

So then I started looking at oak and… erm… wow. That’s a big price jump but it would last a lifetime…

Where did you get yours from? Am I better sourcing a local timber place do you think?

Got mine from Etsy & it’s made of pine. I’ve bought a lot of furniture and shelves etc. from a whole range of different sellers on there - all brilliant. It meant I had to wait weeks and even months in some cases when I moved in but so glad I did it instead of a standard Ikea (or similar!) trip.

I used a large piece of sideboard from my parents kitchen when they remodelled. It’s solid walnut.

I would check out local DIY / Trade stores and also consider looking for reclaimed woods, for £280 for that size I think you can get a hardwood. Although as I said, wood prices are up significantly in the last few months.

You can make them from sleepers too with a bit more effort (glueing and sanding), doesn’t have to be solid.

Now you’re talking my language

Solid walnut, reclaimed wood, sleepers - all sound amazing. I just want solid piece of wood with loads of character instead of a cheap laminated IKEA one I’ve got now.

Which is great, don’t get me wrong but it’s getting a bit tatty now, can’t support the weight and I want something a bit special now I’m using it all day every day.

Is it just me that watches too many “desk setup” videos on YT?

This is the one that prompted me to bump the thread

Hahaha I’ve started.

All the cable management porn is also really good. I’m definitely going to use one of these things above and below my desk for routing cables.

A quick look for you and I think your Etsy price is high unless I’m missing something.

This place has lots of hardwoods, can do custom size specs and it looks like 2m x 60cm of oak is £200 or so

Awesome. I knew Etsy would be because they’re generally a middle person but what attracted me to that was the live edge.

I’ll do some more Googling later. I was searching for desktops but I think worktops should yield better results - thanks! :+1:

We’re still at home, they want us in 2 days a week at some point but there’s no space available for now. So keeping to the WFH for longer yet

I was expecting to be back in the office for a day a week in August, then two days a week in September, which is what had been rumoured. Management have had a rethink and said stay at home until at least the end of August, with a decision to be made in a few weeks depending on what situation we’re in at the time. I’ve been going in once a month to do some stuff which I can’t do from home… last time I went in, there were two of us in, out of a usual office population of 100+. I wouldn’t mind going in once a week or so if there were people to talk to… if I’m going to sit by myself in front of a computer I might as well do it at home and save the time any money on not commuting in.

We’ve been told that we will only be required In the office maybe twice a month at the most but it won’t be until start of the new year. It’ll also only be when we really need to be in like team meetings or other collaboration activities but it will also be planned around an evening social aspect.

No point being in the office if all you’ll be doing is being on teams calls. Can do that from home.

Ours have stated it be nice to be back for ‘collaboration’, it doesn’t really work with our teams as we all pretty much work remotely from each other anyways. It’s rare for any of our teams to actually have another person from the same department working in the same building.

We’re all over the country, so we’re thinking we can get around this by saying well yeah that’s nice however, I don’t have anyone from my side of the business in this building or any that are close to me. So coming in is pointless as I’ve still no one to bounce ideas off in the office.

And if there’s a few in person/few on teams, the meeting is a mess!
