Working from Home

Cable management porn

I need a new desk first though. It’s just a tatty cheap one and because I have a huge monitor arm it leans slightly. Which is what I fear will happen if I got an ikea one.

If I don’t get that secretlab desk where all the cables are hidden inside it, I think for me it is going to be several things:

  1. Lots of velcro ties
  2. Buy extended cables like DVI, HDMI, power and USB extensions. (so I can route them neater instead of having to go direct).
  3. One of those cable boxes for the multi socket adaptors.
  4. Some sort of undertray/hammock or perhaps some sticky back velcro to stick the velcro ties to.

Then lots of stress because even though I’ve just set up my whole system I can see most of it is tangled already

Business idea: monitors you can write on with fountain pens. :bulb:

I can’t remember whether I’ve said this here or not but we’ve just all been called in to dump everything from our desks and clear the way for a massive rearrangement of the office.

I hope for some sensible collaboration offering since it’s that aspect of work that falls apart at the moment but I’m as cynical as everyone else as to whether the ‘higher ups’ are capable of coming up with something workable. One thing is certain, the hybrid approach just doesn’t work.

Little bump; How’s everyone doing? Still at home x5 days? Mixing it up?

And the main reason for my bump, does anyone have/use a standing desk? I want one (probably for the cool buttons) but my fear is that I’ll use it stood up for the morning, put it down and then it’ll never go up ever again.

Where’s the person who does the polls when you need them?

I’m working fully remote now and on days like this I wish I was in the office with aircon

I’m shopping for a new desk too! but ruled out an adjustable one for the same reasons as you. I think it sounds good in theory but I don’t think I’d use the standing up bit much. Plus they seem limited in size range too?

After visiting a chiropractor recently because I sat like a prawn, I learned a lot of interesting things. For example, all “normal” desks are too tall for the average person. A desk needs to be a certain height based on your height which is 71cm tall for me who is 5ft 10’.

I’m therefore looking at getting a nice big piece of solid wood cut and stained. Then those metal legs you can get on amazon like the below and putting it together myself. This way it’s entirely custom, made to last, no cheap ikea stuff, and exact to my needs in both ergonomics, size and style.

I think I’m going to go with a ‘live edge’ too so it has a bit of character.

I used to have a standing desk at work, really liked it. Never put it down because I genuinely found it more comfortable having it at the right height to work at standing. Sadly I changed sites earlier this year and my site site does not have any standing desks

Also, trick to stop you lowering it to sit-down level too often is to put a filing cabinet or something underneath it.

I have similar, didn’t build it myself though. Cost me around £360, 180cm.

Ooooo I like that

That’s perfect and pretty similar to what I’m after, same size and you oddly have the same colour wall as me too

I think it would stop me slouching (obviously) and maybe keep me more focussed. Rather than I am now, with my feet up and watching YouTube.

I don’t have one at home, but I used to work in an office where sit/stand desks were standard issue, and I used it all the time. I found it particularly useful to overcome the post-lunch lethargy.

I went in with the same mindset as you, but ended up loving it so much that I’m going to get a Fully Jarvis Bamboo standing desk once I have an office that it’ll fit in…

Exactly how I made my desk. It looks amazing, so many people come round and ask where I got it. Well worth the afternoon it took.

That said - you know that wood prices are through the roof atm? Where are you getting the wood from?

I haven’t decided on what wood I want yet. That image I posted earlier is from a seller I found on etsy and it’s pine.

They want £280 to post me a live edge piece that is 180cm x 60cm.

I have a setup similar to the image @jaisullivan posted earlier except 3 monitors so I worry if it will be sturdy enough with all that weight from the monitor arm in the middle.

So then I started looking at oak and… erm… wow. That’s a big price jump but it would last a lifetime…

Where did you get yours from? Am I better sourcing a local timber place do you think?

Got mine from Etsy & it’s made of pine. I’ve bought a lot of furniture and shelves etc. from a whole range of different sellers on there - all brilliant. It meant I had to wait weeks and even months in some cases when I moved in but so glad I did it instead of a standard Ikea (or similar!) trip.

I used a large piece of sideboard from my parents kitchen when they remodelled. It’s solid walnut.

I would check out local DIY / Trade stores and also consider looking for reclaimed woods, for £280 for that size I think you can get a hardwood. Although as I said, wood prices are up significantly in the last few months.

You can make them from sleepers too with a bit more effort (glueing and sanding), doesn’t have to be solid.
