What's the Last Bit of Tech You Bought?

This remains an issue. MacOS has poor scaling support in comparison to Windows.

There is an extremely useful app for MacOS called BetterDisplay which gives you access to many additional settings including HIDPI options that simply don’t appear in MacOS settings.

As with many things on MacOS, 3rd party apps tend to fill the gaps left by Apple rather well, especially for the more technical users.

That’s target display mode but you can just plug it in with Thunderbolt

Excellent - thank you  My mother uses an M1 Mac Mini with an old 21" Dell monitor and it looks awful (to me, after a Retina display). It was pin-sharp with Windows, though. Maybe I can tweak the settings and get it to look better.

Do you have a link for this?

Unfortunately target display mode linked above isn’t an option as the iMac in question isn’t old enough.

Luna display looks interesting. Slightly concerned though that it’s something thats probably more likely to stop working and need troubleshooting than a dedicated display. Also, can it even be used for primary display? It seems to be advertised as a tool to add a secondary display.

It’s possible I got the 27" wrong as I’m not sure he has 5K resolution. Anyway, I think he’d appreciate a display larger than 24" going forward.

Is there a particular term or feature to look for in monitor specifications?

Edit: Just remembered I created a widescreen monitor thread a while back. Wasnt specifically asking about use with a Mac at the time but there does seem to be some chat about Mac scaling issues in that thread.

There isn’t, sadly. It’s just about the resolution. MacOS uses pixel doubling or quadrupling to achieve clarity (it’s called “HiDPI” if you’d like to read up on it).

It will scale a 4K display to 1080/HD (25% of the pixels of a 4K display). This is how “Retina” works, it’s not a technology as such, it’s just a method.

If you’d like a good experience on MacOS, aim for a 4K display made by LG. MacOS always seems to be best optimised for LG displays, in my experience.

Other displays will work fine, it will just require some tweaking with BetterDisplay or similar.

That being said, if you don’t care about Retina and are happy with a less clear display, then any monitor will work for you on MacOS.

Much like Mike, having used a Retina display for years, I struggle to go back.

Umm… you might find you go back to Windows pretty often, in that case.

Parallels is exceptionally good for productivity - I use it a lot. It feels almost native in terms of performance these days, especially on Apple M4 Pro.

However, there is a reason I have a PS5 for gaming. Parallels just can’t pull it off, in my opinion. It always feels laggy or slightly juddery.

Native gaming on MacOS is getting better, but I really wouldn’t buy a Mac if gaming is your priority. I’d stick with Windows for that, or go Mac/Console, like me.

Something for you to keep in mind.

P.S. I’m aware it’s “macOS” and not "MacOS’. I just prefer to capitalise the M.

I just type the letters and autocorrect changes it to macOS

Same. I then just re-correct back to my way. :slightly_smiling_face:

Fairly typical of youngsters nowadays, unfortunately, even on the job applications I used to have to look at when I was interviewing for positions at work.

I’ve just renewed Parallels for another year but will check out Fusion. Thanks.

It shouldn’t be too much longer. Whilst Apple aren’t showing much interest, the enthusiast community is working flat out on getting Windows working reliably on Apple Silicon, using W11 ARM builds.

I reckon we will have a reliable dual-boot solution soon enough. As for licensing implications, well that’s another discussion entirely.

I do miss the days of official Bootcamp support, with an eGPU hooked up, you had the best of all worlds.

I’m using my M4 Mini with a 32" LG 4K monitor and to my eyes it’s totally fine (LG 32UN650-W).

I think any 4K monitor would more than do the job. At any sort of normal viewing distance, blurry text really isn’t an issue.

I’m sure a 5K Studio Display would look better, but for over 5x the price I’d wager it’s not even twice as good.

I have an external 2TB SSD plugged into mine. Apple’s storage upgrade pricing is also too rich for my blood. 256GB base storage is shit, but so is 512GB for £200 more.

About to pull the trigger on this

Anyone have experience with the brand of fridges?

Haven’t had one myself.

But I’d pay a £100 more to buy it from Costco, let alone less.

Yup, we’ve used one for 3 years now. Worked perfectly.

The downside to our model (design issue) is the speed of the water outlet, although ours is the non-plumbed-in-version and also linked to that, if you let the water tank run out, the pipe gets airlocked and you have got to blow down the pipe to clear it like:

The solar panels and battery kit we had installed in July have so far generated 1635kWh of electricity, of which 625kWh were exported to the grid and the rest were used by the house either at the time or via the battery.

However, four and a half months after we had the kit installed we still don’t have an export meter point number so can’t get paid for exports. We also cannot sign up for smart tariffs to cut our import consumption costs until we get this.

It took 3 months for National Grid to provide the paperwork we needed to apply for the MPAN. We submitted that to Octopus 6 weeks ago and after much chasing I’ve been told that they think they have lost the documents I uploaded in electronic form, but their system doesn’t allow them to tell me that or allow me to upload them again.

My take on it is that the industry doesn’t seem to have a clue what it’s doing…

Ordered a Eufy L60 Robo Vac as a Christmas present for the Mrs.

Before everyone goes crazy, she’s very particular about her hoover and doesn’t let anyone else touch it, so it really is “for her”.

Got a similar one myself and have done for the past year - works a treat and never had an issue with it
Some amount of space in the fridge compartment which is great!

I’ve narrowed my robovac search down to two…

I actually purchased a Roborock Q8 Max for £189 during Black Friday period. But hasn’t been delivered yet and am now considering getting a Xiaomi S20+ instead (£169). The Xiaomi has some advanced features not usually found at this price point such as rotating mop heads and automatic carpet detection.
