What's the Last Bit of Tech You Bought?

That offer was fantastic, made me finally upgrade from an old USB-A NEO to a 5C

The first thing I thought of when I saw your reply was this:

I’d agree when it comes to Indy apps. But the big apps are all much of a muchmess to me on both platforms.

Rather than iOS having better apps, the issue I find is iOS having the app full stop, and it not existing on Android.

Again, doesn’t affect the big services but many an Indy app is only on iOS.

These are both 5C NFC and cover all my devices - Macs, iPhone (via NFC), iPad Pro (has USB C) and Pixel 6a.

I’ve also replaced my TOTP authenticator app with the Yubico one which stores them all on the keys themselves.

Is this a timed offer? I’ve been thinking of using a custom domain with iCloud+, and this might get me to give it a go.

What happens if one should lose their Yubikey? Is the account down the drain?

Don’t do it! Once you’ve bought one through iCloud/cloudflare and realised how cheap and easy it is compared to the days of old, an addiction will form. I have 18 domains since I bought a test one for my dog just to have a play, which eventually turned into a Squarespace blog (those aren’t cheap). Another is being used to play with setting up a mastodon server. It’s become a full time hobby at this point. Took me over a month to complete Pokémon because all my freetime went on this stuff.

What in the world am I supposed to do with tommacmonier.com

Haha, I am not techy enough to play around with these things! The only thing that would happen is I set up a vanity email address (sadly my surname is very close to a well-used word in the IT world, so firstname@surname.com won’t work because the domains just aren’t there) that I then decide not to pay for after the first year.

You know, if it’s vanity you want, ndrw@omg.lol is available. :joy: that’s another rabbit hole btw. Since discovering omg.lol a few days ago because of you, I’ve bought 4 accounts.

My name is pretty common too which makes it hard to grab vanity stuff if you’re literally not the first. Was surprised I even managed to get just my initials for my Monzo.me one.

How so? My Mac questions?

Yep!

I have the offer (x2) but cant decide which ones to get.

Haha yeah that’s exactly why I went for that one too. I was tempted by the shorter USB-C one but I wanted NFC so went for the 5C NFC. My old NEO was finicky with USB towards the end so NFC was the only way it worked well.

I use Keeper for my TOTP for convenience, but I have my most important accounts saved to YubiKey too.

At one point Cloudflare was cheaper for .uk domains than cost-price directly from Nominet. For some reason after conversion I paid £3.88 for a domain but through work would have been more expensive at cost price (£3.75) + VAT.

Cloudflare pass on the wholesale USD price. Which with fluctuations should work out slightly cheaper than a hedged GBP cost price, especially when your bank charges no fees for foreign currency.

Just checked my six domains and looks like moving from Hover to Cloudlfare will save me $39 per year!!!

That’s insane. Will be transferring tonight!

I’ve always liked Hover, but yeah, if cloudflare gain enough traction in this space, it could kill them.

Gandi still fills its niche in offering some of the more out there TLDs you can’t get at most places, but last I tried buying anything through Hover, they were more limited than cloudflare!

AFAIK it’s still available.

That’s why you order a pair of keys - primary and backup🙂

Is anyone able to recommend a decent, and convenient, circular light which will clip onto both an iPhone and iPad, please? The kind you see YouTubers using?
