Interesting / cool move from Bitwarden!
In process of leaving lastpass today and setting up bitwarden also paid the $10 for bitwarden, just need to change the OTP accounts now
I have used Dashlane for a good few years now and have always liked how it works across all my devices. That said, the majority of main players have also improved in this period and the upgrades to the likes of iOS and other OS’s allowing you to set default password managers has been a game changer really.
Currently I am using Dashlane also for OTP with 99% of my accounts. However, I still use Microsoft Authenticator for my work and home O365 (and Dashlane) accounts as I like the password-less signing workflow of those much better. I do like the Dashlane OTP workflow when it integrates on sites that allow that, but I am still not sure if I should keep OTP and password managers separate, interested in what others think about that?
I also see that MS Authenticator is now including password management, but I have yet to explore that in any details.
Dashlane seem to be moving to web app only on desktops and it looks like they will drop their desktop app sometime soon. Not sure how I feel about that yet as I would feel I would always like to be able to review password offline - but I can still do that on iOS.
I have followed this thread for a while and have tried some of the other apps and got on okay with most, but there was nothing significantly better than Dashlane, so have allays returned to that.
I have to say that the best of the bunch I tried was Bitwarden and I think if I wasn’t already invested in Dashlane that it may well have have become my password app of choice, but there is very little between them, in my opinion. So I am equally happy to recommend Dashlane to others.
That’s my plan too since its getting very close to the deadline.
Surely only business customers are likely to remain once the dust settles because it would be quite a hassle to move? Unlike us personal users where can can simply export/import.
I’d recommend using a different program/app for OTP than you do for password management. It pays not to keep all your eggs in one basket.
I would imagine it’s going to be the same process import/export just under a main account with sub users?
I did use the lastpass authenticator, but now using Authly, just hope there is some import export facility for these instead of resetting up about 20 again
You’ll have to let me know because I use lastpass authenticator too!
Apparently you can not you have to go to each account and set up each one again, read something on Reddit to say don’t chose a OTP that doesn’t allow you to export the “seeds” trying to fine it again , gave a list of what to use
Once you’re set up with Authy, you can back up your accounts so you can restore to a new device.
That’s fine for that need, but if I decide not to use Authy I have to go to each site to update the new Authenticator app I am using as you cannot “currently” export “seeds”
I know in BitWarden I can manually take the OTP code and paste that into another authenticator app if I ever wanted to move them out. Not sure if there’s an export option, as haven’t looked that far.
When I moved from LastPass that part was easy with the export. I decided I wanted OTP sat in BitWarden too so I just moved a few over a day until I’d completed that task. Started with the ones I use the most.
Really disappointed to see 1Password has switched to an electron app. I think they’re going to lose a fair bit of business from that decision.
Feels like a non issue. From what I’ve seen, it’s hard to even tell its Electron. Will reserved judgement till I’ve tried it myself though.
As a web developer I’m all for using web technologies, however, the majority of electron apps on MacOS are complete RAM-hoggers as well as other issues. I hope this breaks the mould but i’m not entirely hopeful, i’ve seen conflicting opinions so far. Would be interested to know if he’s running an Intel or M1 Mac
I don’t have any problem with any of the electron apps I use (slack, discord, atom editor are three I can think of). I thought electron was made good ages ago?
I just took this screenshot on my machine, I promise I din’t open any new apps just to prove my point, but these apps are always open on my machine. only 2 aren’t electron
As someone that uses 1Password on five different platforms, I’d take the wide support over an artfully crafted Mac app.
But I do take your point.
Ohhh this topic brings back memories.
After the huge LastPass news I finally settled on Bitwarden after trying all the over providers several times over.
I’m really happy with my choice and I haven’t looked back. It all works really well and arguably better than LastPass did
I’ve not looked back since switching from LP to Bitwarden it’s brilliant.
I stupidly couldn’t get info my vault though as I’d reset my phone so the Auth app I use for the 2 factor login wasn’t valid anymore for BitWarden 🤦
I’ve since altered that to be sent by email instead. All worked out well as I’m always signed into BitWarden on the laptop. I just downloaded a copy of the data from that. Deleted the account, imported it all back in, then emailed them to get the account reinstated to a premium account.
It was slightly annoying that they had my email address and couldn’t just send a code to that as an emergency, but at end of day I got it all sorted.
Even more annoying is they have a recovery passphrase as a last last resort to get you back into the account. Couldn’t find it anywhere, then 5 seconds after deleting the entire account, I found the passphrase
