What films do you recommend?

Also re bond here’s a pretty good order

As if you start with the Roger Moore / Pierce Brosnan cheese fests it’ll put you right off the other films.

Compared with the Sean Connery / Daniel Craig classics.

Quantum of solace and Spectre are ranked harshly in my view. They weren’t as good but not deserving to be ranked with Moonraker and Live and let die.

Indeed. That’s why I specifically said Trilogy. I don’t count the other two!

I forgot about Dr. No. That’s actually a good film.

I won’t have a bad word said about Live Free or Die Hard, I think it’s a great addition.

A Good Day… should have taken its own advice!

 yeah I mean as action films go its fine just not a patch on the three original.

On Bond it’s interesting if you stack them by actor.

Sean Connery

73% - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967)
87% - THUNDERBALL (1965)
95% - DR. NO (1962)
95% - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963)
99% - GOLDFINGER (1964)

George Lazenby

81% - ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE (1969)

Sean Connery again

64% - DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (1971)

Roger Moore

38% - A VIEW TO A KILL (1985)
39% - THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (1974)
43% - OCTOPUSSY (1983)
60% - MOONRAKER (1979)
65% - LIVE AND LET DIE (1973)
73% - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981)
80% - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977)

Sean Connery again again

70% - NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (1983)

Timothy Dalton

74% - THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (1987)
78% - LICENCE TO KILL (1989)

Pierce Brosnan

52% - THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)
56% - TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997)
56% - DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002)
79% - GOLDENEYE (1995)

Daniel Craig

63% - SPECTRE (2015)
64% - QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008)
84% - NO TIME TO DIE (2021)
92% - SKYFALL (2012)
94% - CASINO ROYALE (2006)

Worth a watch I’d say even if spy isn’t your thing.

I would start with the five Daniel Craig’s films and they are meant to be watched in chronological order so start with Casino Royale.

Daniel Craig

94% - CASINO ROYALE (2006)
64% - QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008)
92% - SKYFALL (2012)
63% - SPECTRE (2015)
84% - NO TIME TO DIE (2021)

The other films can be watched in any order without the need to have seen any before.

I’d watch Sean Connery’s original five to see how it started.

Sean Connery

95% - DR. NO (1962)
95% - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963)
99% - GOLDFINGER (1964)
87% - THUNDERBALL (1965)
73% - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967)

I’d only touch the Brosnan films if you really want cheese.

Goldeneye was decent, and gave us this.

Goldeneye is by far my favourite non-Craig Bond film. It might even be No1. The hours spent on the N64 probably help that.

I watched/read some coverage before No Time To Die was released and someone said the best thing to happen to Bond was Bourne. If you compare how Brosnan ended and Craig began, they are worlds apart.

The newer films really dine out of very tired tropes and cliches that, if you aren’t already familiar with the series, will probably pass you by. Take the fan service out and you have at best a mediocre action movie. It might be mildly entertaining, but certainly nothing must see or groundbreaking! And definitely nothing as epic as die hard or other classic action movies.

You can tell I’m not a fan! But personally I’d say, if you want to be mildly entertained I guess watch Casino Royale but honestly if you never watch anything you really aren’t missing much at all.

I feel like watching Austin Powers completely soured all the pre-Daniel Craig Bond films for me. I’m glad they moved away from sharks with lasers!

I have really fond memories of Goldeneye as it was the first Bond movie I saw in the cinema and I still thnk it hold up well.

I still think that Brosnan was a great bond, who was badly let down by the movies he was in.

Yep some of the older films have ridiculous plots/characters/stereotyping/racism etc which led to Austin Powers taking the piss. It was a different time when you could call a character Pussy Galore.

There’s better spy films, and much better actions films out there, but if you are wanting something thats easy to watch, that has decent action and stunts with espionage then they tick all the boxes.

I don’t think anyone stepping in with Daniel is going to have missed out on the prior films.

If you leave your brain at the door they are all enjoyable. A bit like watching any of the Mission Impossible films.

I’d agree if you aren’t a fan then they are average films.

I too have a soft spot of Goldeneye, I loved it at the time but mainly for the game.

Apart from the weird park level, I hated that

Yeah I’d agree with that, that’s about the level of them. Apart from Mission Impossible: Fallout I thought that was actually decent!

edit: Fallout, not MI 4! The 2018 one,

I think take out 2 and 3 and Rogue Nation.

You have the original which is a classic, and then the other two Ghost Protocol and Fallout which are both very good at what they do.

Talking about brainless spy/action movies I’m looking forward to this November 12 on Netflix.

Love this thread!

Try Turin Horse if you’re after something grittier :joy:

Me too!

I went to see The French Dispatch last night and it’s up there as one of the best Wes Anderson films. The cast were all superb and the format works so well - you got multiple mini films in one.

I watched Shang Chi on Disney+ at the weekend!

The IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio is nice. Really, why don’t films that are filmed like that release that way on digital download? It’s perfect for a TV.

I really enjoyed this one a lot, and anything with Michelle Yeoh is always going to get me watching. Her choreography is always phenomenal, although outdone in this film by the dance number at the start!

I think this is my favourite Marvel film, or at the very least the first good one I’ve liked that doesn’t have Spider-Man in it. Much like the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, this struck the right balance of everything for me, which most other marvel films seem to miss.

Red Notice was really good, in a “I want a funny actiony type film to watch that I don’t need to fully concentrate on” way
