We're working on a new look for the Monzo app

Just downloaded 2.44 for iPhone but don’t see any changes. When you say you had to “kill it” @gmclean is that the same as DISMISS? I’ve tried that a couple of times - no difference. Is there a way to check in-app what version I am on? Just in case the download did not go well. R-

Initial thoughts:

  • Please bring some form of dark mode
  • The view all is a bit of a reach when using one hand, clicking the personal account text to switch between accounts/pots would be useful
  • Summary is dearly missed (looking forward to that 0.0.1 update)
  • Payments screen looks very big in comparison to the home screen
  • I quite liked the pulse graph, but now its gone I don’t really know why I liked it. Would be cool to scroll through the months again however, similar to the budgeting screen for each month

So far looks promising!

The old app had a ‘pull down to refresh’ type action.

Is there an equivalent on the new layout?

Seems if you switch tab to payments and back again it refreshes, maybe it runs a bit more live now?

I agree this was true probably back when Monzo was a pre-paid card and I only used it for discretionary spending. I could see at-a-glance if I’d gone overboard during a supermarket shopping day/spent a lot because of a day trip/had a big night out, and this meant it was easier to realise where my money was going and how I’d have to be a bit more careful for certain periods.

Now I have bills and standing orders and the like coming out of my Monzo account (because I migrated more things over once it was a real live current account), sometimes the ‘spent today’ is whack and doesn’t really reflect what I actually consider myself having spent. It may be technically accurate, but it’s not a useful reflection of my spending.

It’s also probably a difficult problem for Monzo to solve, because for every person who only wants their discretionary spending tracked, there’s going to be someone who wants everything included. And all sort of people are going to have all sorts of opinions on what counts as discretionary or not (frex, the person who counts fuel as ‘essential’, other people probably count their grocery shopping as such, etc).

That said, I think it’s definitely a problem worth solving. The budgeting aspects of the app have always been the most useful to me, despite being flawed. It would be disappointing if they were neutered rather than being ‘fixed’ or otherwise improved.

Yep I would love to see this back too  (I haven’t signed up to the testing)
“Spent today” helps me to curb unnecessary spending and provides an easy day to day budgeting view. All my bills come out at the start of the month, so the spent today figure is rarely off whack.

“Kill it” as in force lose it…

App version is in the Settings screen in Monzo, scroll the very bottom and click App Version

Or you can check the version you have by going to the App Store and searching for Monzo. If you have the most recent version, it’ll say ‘Open’ rather than ‘Get’.

Please let one of the new features be Dark mode!

Ok - so I was doing the ‘kill’ correctly and my version is 2.44.0 #521. I have also just removed and re-installed the app.

However I still have the pulse graph, 5 tabs, no profile photo on Home Screen, no peeking Monzo card and I am unable to collapse the feed to get card actions.

Did you sign up for the new look? You need to be ‘on the list’…

Got it, like it, still twitchy without ‘Left to Spend’ but reassured it’s coming back and that’s just around the corner. New feed screen looks great.

Right - no I didn’t and thought the release had got past that stage and was now open to all. My apologies. R-

No worries. I think the signups are still open, but all the caveats apply (as mentioned).

finally got set up with the new UI, i can’t seem to find the budgeting page as that really helps me out as a student. Right now i’m quite close to might my budget for this month (£350).

This was explained in the top post. Summary has gone for the time being

I agree, maybe a carousel type animation to show cards behind the default card?

This 100%. I’m not a fan at the moment because there nothing visual to split it up. That’s perfect

you guys arn’t thinking about the long term impacts!

They said they’d like to show different cards above different account lists. What happens when the card is blue! This is why they’ve kept it minimal and clean. Room for options and adjustments and showing different information they can’t currently show. They are future proofing.

Also I am pretty sure that blue is dead/dying now within the app along with the coloured ‘M’ as part of a branding shift.
