Exactly this, it’s the only thing stopping me closing my legacy bank - I don’t want to ‘accidentally’ pay off some else’s credit card bill
Ah I see thanks, yes that’d be handy.
I’m surprised not to see in the list above the option to split payments.
So when you pay something for a group of people, you can:
- send them a notification/request that appears in their Monzo account, so they just have to click “pay” and they’ve repaid you
- even if they don’t have Monzo but send you money from another bank, you can link that repayment to the original payment so that you only see how much you actually paid for that particular thing.
The above could also be some kind of integration with Splitwise or another similar software but doesn’t have to be.
Will make my accounting so much easier!
Sorry, I missed split payments off, but I can’t edit the poll now. I agree that’d be nice, would be interesting to see how many others agree and where it would fall in the list.
Us tip transactions - I notice that some US transactions where I added a tip have now reposted with tip included. It’d be good if there were an alert to let you know when the value of a transaction has changed.
Well that was an interesting exercise, thanks to all who voted. Some surprises here for me, along with some expected results in the top 10.
- Rules for pots - happily surprised this is first would love to see if this then that style rules for bank accounts.
- Apple pay -
- Savings accounts - another surprise, esp with current rates
- Joint accounts - another perennial in requests, surely will come with time
- Custom Categories - not sure what the current status is by I too have felt this lack - no Savings category for instance. Prefer how this works on tide.
- Bank Statements - not exciting but required I guess.
- CAS - another frequent request so interesting it is down at 7 among current users
- Retrying DD - would be a nice little addition
- Marketplace ISAs etc - really interested to see how this marketplace evolves - if done right it could be a great selling point for Monzo, if done wrong it would make them feel like every other bank, desperate to upsell customers.
- Loyalty programs - another surprise entry at no 10, I’d like to see itemised receipts but these two are linked in many ways
- International payments - surprised this was so low down the list, but haven’t had a great need for it myself, it does seem essential to a proper bank though.
And poor accountancy integrations stuck down the bottom with 1 or 2 votes! I guess few people use an accounting package with their personal banking account.
I think retrying direct debits is going to catch a lot of customers out and cause many complaints as regular banks have this implemented in a much better way.
What’s the better way?
Never understood why developers prioritise Apple over Android given that Android has such higher market share.
I get why Apple pay is high, people like paying with their phone. I have neither Apple nor Samsung nor Google pay, Barclays own app lets you use the phone nfc to make payments direct from your bank (If your a Barclays customer of course) you can even make higher than the usual £30 limit contactless payments by entering your pin. It’s really useful, I used to use it all the time until I decided to give Monzo a go, was really surprised Monzo don’t do the same thing with their app! I left my wallet at home recently by mistake, and after a 15 walk when I got to the tube station and realised, I was about to have to make the walk back when I remembered I could use contactless on my phone direct with my Barclays account so I didn’t need my wallet or Monzo card at all.
When is this feature coming to Monzo? I’m really surprised a high street bank is ahead of you in this regards. Like really surprised, I thought the whole idea of Monzo was that we all have phones so don’t need to go to a bank, if the phone is the account why should I need a card? Implement this feature and the need to offer Apple pay for contactless payment is negated.
Apple don’t allow anyone to use the NFC chip on their phones as far as I’m aware - so the Barclays thing is most probably Android only.
I read an article the other day saying that companies are losing out on potentially millions of pounds by concentrating on iOS and treating Android as an afterthought. Apparently Snapchat did it and their Android numbers plummeted - now they’re prioritising Android.
There are a tiny number of Apple devices in the world compared to Android.
For most of Monzo’s development, Apple has been prioritised over Android. It’s only in the last couple of months that Android has got some features first, and in other ways the Android app still hasn’t caught up!
The reason Android pay has launched and not Apple pay is not because Monzo prioritised it deliberately, but because the Android pay feature was ready first. Unfortunately Apple are much stricter with terms and conditions etc so any delay is down to them interacting with Monzo.
Indeed, the Apple contract is so restrictive that Monzo cannot talk about where they are with Apple pay at all! As such, it’s unfair to blame Monzo for any delay here.
Should not even need andriod pay, the ability to utilise the nfc chip should be built into the Monzo app like Barclays does (No doubt to avoid having to pay a fee to google)
bunq (a Dutch fintech) also have NFC payments built into their app. However I dislike it and prefer having credit and debit cards from different banks in the one familiar Android Pay app
Barclays App allows payments up to just a £100 with Andriod Pay there is no such limit as long as retailer supports it. Just this week I paid £500 with Android pay (Monzo) for car servicing.
And I hate that constant notification if Barclays mobile payments are enabled
Could you articulate what would be superior in that arrangement? As a counter point it would be significantly more work
I can’t see international payments being a priority for most/majority of people
The Rules for Pots has a lot of scope to help automate things. I’d really like to see the ability to tag my wage payment and have the ability to trigger a transfer based on that incoming payment. To pots or a payee.
If not done within Monzo the app itself (which would be the best) then perhaps IFTTT integration (I guess once a public API launches)
As someone mentioned about the Payments tab is a bit of a muddle with not being able to save references. I have to pay SLC via two references each month and this does drive me mad. I had to find a workaround of setting up two payees as a standing order on different dates (19th/20th) to ensure this sends to the same account but with different reference per payment.
Is it just me, but surely the Recuring Payments sub tab should be on the Payments tab rather than Spending?.. Just seems odd to be “over there” when all payments etc are in the other area.
But all in all. A great end to 2017! And I feel that Monzo will become the complete niggle-free bank in 2018
Cheers for all the innovation.
firstly my bank lets me know if direct debits are pending for the next working day.
Secondly they send you a message to advise you have direct debits that will be returned by (I think 1pm) if funds are not added to the account to fund the direct debits. Rather than flat declining and then not re-presenting them.
The issue with direct debits not being paid is the downstream implications. Some companies cancel direct debits if a payment is missed and you have to set up another. Others charge a late fee even if you then pay by other means. So it just becomes a big mess to deal with.
That’s fair but from reading your description it just sounds like that bank just tries the direct debits once as well but at 1pm instead of whenever it is Monzo does. Since that bank doesn’t give you instant notifications I guess we’ll never know for sure?
Interestingly direct debits don’t actually involve your bank sending to the merchant immediately. It operates in a totally antiquated snails pace that means that if your bank fails to debit your account then it literally takes two additional days for the charging bank to effectively know this
There’s a very nice write up of the process on GoCardless
