Vertical Card Discussion (All Banks) 💳

It does seem like a very short amount of time to develop a feature like this but if it’s been tested and it works then what’s the problem?

Ok, I actually really like the starling cards…
I want vertical. :upside_down_face:

Randomly had an ad for Wirex pop up last night. Seems Starling are late to the teal party

Well ICIC bank in India had Coral cards before Monzo so Monzo were also a bit late :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The only thing that bugs me about the vertical design is that the back is still horizontal. I know the mag stripe can’t be rotated but the rest of the details could be? :upside_down_face: it’s inconsistent.

Wouldn’t it look squished if you had the back the same? Especially the long number

I guess it depends how they choose to display it

I’d like to see mockups

I’m torn on the whole “card being accepted everywhere” thing.

Of course people want their card to be accepted, and to have it simply “work”.

But in accommodating practices that are very out of date, and quite frankly, should be left behind (cheques, card printing etc), you are only prolonging their stay.

Imagine if every single UK bank decided “No more cheques” - Everyone would simply get on board and find another way (a more “current” way).

It’s a fine act to balance, and one that is much harder for something like a bank, than say, Apple (who can make drastic changes such as removing the headphone jack, but still have a working product at the end of it).

Imagine if private companies decided how everyone should behave?

There’s always carrier pigeons if you don’t like the way the world is moving

We can’t keep around old technology if we want to move forward.

Why can’t they coexist so people can have a choice?

This is all my opinion of course, but if you need to cater for absolutely everyone, even when there are other, better, faster ways… You’ll just end up slowing down development across the board.

As this is the Starling Feedback thread, I’ll comment on them.

They have been in discussions for months (years?) about paying in cheques and cash at the Post Office - Just think of the extra work that could have been done if they didn’t need to do that?

Apple removing the headphone jack was scandalous at the time, and the question was asked “why can’t we have both?”

Well now wireless headphones are cheaper, and more accessible for people, as companies battle to bring the latest tech to market.

Having to cater for old technology will simple move us forward at a snails pace.

Again, just my opinion

This wouldn’t happen because the majority of customers who have a lot of money in their banks are often the older generation, many of whom want to carry on using cheques. They will be phased out eventually but whilst those customers refuse to use an alternative payment method, they will always be around, or will be phased out slowly over many years (as is currently the case)

We can. And do. There are plenty of smartphones out there with headphone jacks.

One of the reasons I’ve stuck with my iPhone 6 is lack of headphone jack on later models (it’s not the main, or only reason).

In my hypothetical dreamland… If banks did decide to stop accepting cheques, I’m pretty sure these wealthy older folk would find a new way.

My grandparents never saw the value in things like iPhones and iPads “What a waste of money, why would anyone need that” was all they said.

I bought them an iPad for their anniversary one year, and they haven’t looked back since.

People often don’t realise what they want/need, until they either don’t have a choice, or it’s gifted to them.

What about pensioners who give their carer a cheque to cash? It’s safer than card and PIN number

I’m sure they would but we know realistically this will never happen. The reason cheques are still around as we all know is because that certain sector of society was pretty unhappy when they tried to phase them out the first time and the banks listened because… they often have a lot of money.

My Grandad is the same to be honest but lots of older people are still somewhat “wary” of the internet and online banking etc and often pay totally in cash where they can (obviously not all of them). So unfortunately it’s going to be something that disappears slowly over a lot of years whilst they are still accepted in places.

Which is absolutely your decision, and you’ve highlighted the difference between an all or nothing decision like “removing cheques”, vs the ability to be able to use the older technology in your phone choice.

I’m not saying people who use cheques are bad! Nor am I saying that if you like old technology you are evil…

It’s absolutely your decision what you want to use.

But there is no doubt that if companies (not just banks), have to cater for absolutely everyone, and all technologies, it will slow down development of new stuff.

There will always examples that counter every decision, and I don’t want to go around in circles on this.

I appreciate we aren’t there (I never said we were), and that we probably won’t get there for 20 odd years.

I just find it a shame that people don’t embrace new (better) ways of doing things, rather than stick to what they know.

We really need the card number etc in the app, please Monzo!

Maybe this can be done once pin support to open the app arrives…:eyes:

To be honest I don’t think any banks can win either way. They tried taking cheques away and that went no way we all reverted back. I think the new banks like starling and Monzo have the edge with new technologies. I may be the expection but I get occasional cheques from my grand parents for birthday or Christmas so have to pay them in somehow. They won’t use online banking.
