UX for making payments with multiple accounts present

Pain point: I keep sending money from the wrong account.

Background: I have a personal + joint account on Monzo. When I go to make a payment, an account is preselected for the money to come out of. My focus is elsewhere such as the amount and payment details therefore I keep forgetting to check which account the money will be taken from. This results in money being sent from the wrong account.

I have noticed that even if I am previously viewing a particular account, this does not change the preselected account during payments.

Solution: Make me choose the account the money should come out of (personal or joint). Don’t worry about the additional step - I’d much rather be forced in to selecting an account than sending money from the wrong one.

The additional step you’re requesting already exists.

In the ‘final’ payment screen, where you enter the amount of money to pay, tap on the account below it to select the source account from which the payment will be taken:

I think you’ve misunderstood the problem and the ask. I want this field to be empty, something along the lines of ‘Choose account to pay with’ - a step that makes me select the account rather than Monzo preselecting it for me.

I can see where the flow is confusing, but there are 2 steps. The one where you can choose the account and then the secondary confirmation if needed.

The first step* is the Account top-left-drop-down-then-bottom-selection after you’ve tapped on ‘Payments’ from the Home screen. You get the chance to choose which account to make the payment from. Then, in the amount screen (my screenshot above), you can again select the required account by tapping on the source account & selecting the preferred account.

*The first step also sets up the correct payment options for the selected account. Because Joint accounts are unfortunate runner-up accounts, there are differences - like no splits - and so the first selection gives you what options are available in Payments, depending on the account selected.

Doesn’t solve the problem. This isn’t about a confusing flow.

In the past week I have made payments from both my personal account and my joint account. Both times I accidentally sent the money from the wrong account. The account should not be preselected because as a user, my attention is on the amount and the payee details.

A solution to this problem is to make me choose the account.

Fair request. I don’t mind the up-front thinking to select the correct account, but then again, we only use the Joint account for payments (other than scheduled Flex, Max & 1p challenge from my Personal) so it’s almost like anti-muscle-memory for us to have the Joint selected every time.

This is normal practice.

Of my accounts, Halifax and Chase both preselect an account for me and rely on me checking it and changing as appropriate.

Would be interesting to know if their users have the same frustration. I’m definitely not alone on this Monzo forum when it comes to this issue.

Annoys the hell out of me. I can be in my personal account, check the balance or perhaps withdraw funds from a pot with which to make a payment.

Click on Payments and Pay someone. My focus is then on selecting the Payee, entering an amount and a reference.

In my head it’s perfectly reasonable to assume that because I was in my personal account when I selected Payments, that will be the account selected by default to pay from.

Nope. At least half the time it’s the joint account - or, if I’m in the joint account it defaults to the personal account. And at least half the time when that happens, I don’t spot it.

Edit: and likewise, if you’re on the consolidated view / activity feed, it should absolutely be blank and make you pick an account.
